Afm Lifters And Oil Change Interval

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas.

I have the infamous GM lifter noise/tick now which I assume is the AFM lifter issue others have mentioned. The noise went from nonexistent to occasional to the point where it does it the entire time the engine is running (started that this week). So I figured it was time to set an appointment to get it checked out. When I scheduled the appointment, the service advisor asked when the last time was that I changed the oil and how many miles it has been. (3 months/4000 miles...running Mobil1). I thought that was an odd question. Im old school and still check the oil each time I fill up and the truck doesn't burn a drop of oil.

What do you think he is fishing for with that question?

I go in tomorrow morning at 7:30 so we'll see how it goes. While I'm there, I'm going to have them look at the fan motor for the heat as well. The motor chirps like a bird when its on low and the temps are below 30.

Old oil can cause lifters to make noise. Also they might have wanted to just blame it on you not changing your oil often enough. Best thing you can tell them is what they want to hear. Is your truck still under warranty?

Take it in and see what they say. I would lay it on as thick as you can. Really the only way you can get these dealerships to do anything anymore. My fiancee's dad takes it in like 10 miles before the warranty is up and makes them fix everything. He actually called GM and reported a dealership and he got 50,000 miles worth of free oil changes. Definitely worth giving them an ear full if they do nothing.

Yeah, still under warranty. It just turned 29,000 miles yesterday.
