Can You Put A 5th Wheel Hookup In A Short Bed Truck?

THe yukon might sell, so whatever pickup its ends up being im just curious if it has to be a long bed or can you put it in a short bed truck? Im really leaning towards a cc lb, but if a good deal comes on a ccsb i want to make sure i can put one in, its just gonna be for a camper.

do you mean a standard bed, or that thing they put on the half ton crew cabs? no issues with a fiver hitch in a standard bed, ive had sliders and rigid mount.... i always have a headache rack because its easier to fix a rv than a cab, and you can contact the cab in a long bed.... also make sure you dont do the tailgate fiver kiss...

 

as for the half ton crew, i doubt you could haul`with it becase it is too short, and you dont have much pin weight capacity...

Yes, it can be done with a 6.5' bed. Reese makes a sliding 5th hitch that works and if you get the 5.8' bed, then there's a solution for that too. There's a swing arm that attaches to the trailer and the slider can work with the swing arm. Neither is cheap though... but there are workable solutions for short bed pickups and 5th's :thumbs:

what kind of pin can it carry? im surprised that a short bed can be configured for a fiver/goose...

Weight? Is that what your asking? I've looked into it a couple times and the RV dealerships provided the solutions, and I've seen it done at the camp sites. Just no spec without digging deeper right now.

yes, pin(or king) is short for pin weight... both those aplications you linked to, are for standard bed trucks(6.5' beds). ive never seen a workable solution for the half ton crew cab truck, those 5.5' beds....

only getting a real truck, hehehehe.... with a long bed you can contact the cab, but ive never been in a situation with a standard bd where i couldnt manouver the fiver.... ive hauled from newfoundland to alaska to texas with a standard bed and no slider and havent touched the cab... if you go with a slider or a forward pin box; you have to be aware of the change in weight distribution, not usually aproblem because of speed but the mechanics do change

 

as for a short bed you lose even more length between the axle and cab, while a suitable solution may exist i havent seen it....

Presuming you can handle the pin weight, you can pull a 5th wheel with a 6.5' bed.

 

The best solution is the Reese "Sidewinder" (web site = http://www.reeseprod.com/content/products.aspx?lvl=2&parentid=7300&catID=7360 &part=0://http://www.reeseprod.com/content/pr...360 &part=0 ). This option gives you two great advantages....

 

1) You can make 90-degree turns without the trailer fouling the cab or rear window.

2) The "pivot point" is transfered about 20 inches away from the truck axle, giving you much easier backing maneuvering, almost like backing a tag-trailer.

 

Other solutions are sliders on the hitch. The Reese models are awful --- don't even consider them.

 

PullRite makes a line of sliders called "Super Glide". They are spendy, but good products.

 

All in all, the SideWinder would be my choice, slightly less money than PullRite, and gives you the second feature of better maneuvering in backing situations.

Pullrite.. thats the one and the other was the super glide. Both were the ones optioned by the RV dealers. Price was around $2000 dealer installed if I remember right too.

Most ppl I talk to with shortbeds and sliders say they never or very rarely have to use them. Alot depends on the RV too. Some already have extended pins on them and rounded noses that really help for the shortbeds.

Most newer 5ers have a front cap designed to be shortbed compatible. I have an2500HD extended cab shortbed and my 07 crossroads cruiser 32bl allows me to be past 90 degrees without hitting.

I believe the slider hitches were a by-product of the 5.5/6 foot beds on the 1/2 tons so you can pull the feather lite type 5th wheels. People were pulling 5th wheels in the standard 6.5 beds long before without any issues. I think a slider in a regular 6.5 bed is just added insurance (you may not need)....

    • New to this forum.  Also looking to tune a 6L80 and trying to work out all the issues in my transmission swap.  I have a 6.2 diesel (1983) and have removed the TH-400 and about to put in a 6L80 with a TCM-2600 interface and don't have a clue what I doing after that.  Did you (Leatherneck/RAV3) get your slip resolved?
