New (to Me) 1994 Help

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone. I've just purchased my first fullsized truck for a song. It's a 1994 Sierra XC, 5.7l and 118k on it. It is in great shape, but I think it needs a tune up. I'm interested in suggestions on:

1. Where I can find a copy of the owners manual/maintenance schedule (for free hopefully). I've don't some online searching, but no dice yet.

2. What should I do to tune it up. I don't belive it's had new plugs/wires yet, but I haven't been able to pull a plug yet to see what they look like. Are there plugs that you would recommend? I'm interest in keeping this rig as mpg efficient as possible.

Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to being a part of this community.

To add to my first quesion, are Autolite plugs and wires any good? They have good prices and a rebate on them and I was looking at their double plat plugs. Any help would be appreciated as I've only researched and swapped plugs on cars. Thanks.

Personal choice is always AcDelco for plugs and wires on all GM trucks. As far as the manual goes, ebay is a good source unless someone with talent can find you one online.

Congrats on the new purchase and Welcome

+1 for the Delco's, I wont use anything but Delco plugs in a GM motor. Since you have a stock or near stock motor the Delco wires will do the job.

I agree always try to go with delco parts on a factory GM. They always last longer. When I bought my truck the guy before me had just put bosch plugs and wires on it and the plugs fouled out in about 10K miles, so I changed it back to delco and haven't had any problems yet.

I had a friend that came by to look at it and noticed one of the more visible plugs has "bosch platinum" on it. I need to pull them and see if they're shot or good still. Also the wires say "packer" on them. I'm thinking it's likely that they're are not the OE wires. Someone told me the NGK v-power plugs seem to do well in these old engines. Any opinions here on those?

Thanks for all your input.

Acdelco for plugs for plugs and wires. I would get a dist cap and rotor button.

One other thing I noticed...there's a recirculation tube from the pass side exhaust going straight up into the intake that's loose. I had an old chev car that had a similar set-up. It seems that I've read that that doesn't do much to help like they thought. It seems that all aftermarket CAI don't have that on there either. What if I just plug those off? Anyone w/ experience in this? Thanks again.

Update...I've got some tune up supplies listed below. I'm interested in your thoughts on plugs. I read mixed reviews on current a/c delcos as they're not made in USA now and am thinking NGK v-power or Bosch super plus plugs, but open to any experienced-based recommendations. The PO had Bosch +2 Plats put in it and from what I read this may be causing a little of the rough running on this older truck. Also, some open the gap a little on their plugs when they get a higher volt ignition system and the stuff on order provide that so what do you recommend. OE is .035...should I gap to .04 or leave it at .035 and see how it runs? Any help on tuning this up would be greatly appreciated. Not looking to make it a hot rod, but do want a well running truck. Thanks.

ON ORDER:

Hypertech 4001 - Power Charger (not quite a tune up part, but for $35 thought it couldn't hurt).

Hypertech 4054 - Hypertech Coils Kit

Taylor Cable 64628 - Taylor Hi-Energy Spark Plug Wire Sets

People have given you good advise here. Consensus seems to be, "Stick with OEM AC/Delco parts"....... for what it's worth, I agree.

Kind of odd that you ask for advise, 100% replies are AC/Delco and you come back with a post about aftermarket junk (and that's just what it is).

Good luck with your tune-up.... :D

Thanks wavery. I see what you're saying. $$$ are tight and I just want to do the best thing; not have to redo anything soon.

Get a Haynes or Chilton manual at a used bookstore for about $10

hey dude... you asked the question about plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor ... and you got about a dozen people to respond all with exactly the same answer ... then you go and ask again about specific non-ACDelco parts...

.. why ask if you have no intention of following the lead that this advice is giving you..?

.. you say $$$ are tight ... but then you are spending $$$ on non-essential non-ACDelco things for your truck that you have already ordered ..

I'm sorry, but there is no consistency in your approach to all this
