Starter Issue

Hi, I have a 1998 GMC Suburban K1500 with 175000 miles on it. When I go to start it the starter cranks for a few seconds, stops for a second or so then it fires right up and runs fine. The fuel pressure is fine. This happens with a new battery and even a jump start. This was a new starter and it has been doing it since day one.(the ols starter did id but worse and I changes it because the plastic housing on the starter was cracked and falling apart). My sons 1998 S10 Blazer was doing the same thing and finally the starter failed completely and it starts great with the new starter. My questions are:

1) Could I have a bad starter or could it need shiming?

2) I read somewhere that it could be a bad crank sensor, is this possible and where is it on the engine (5.7L) and can it be tested and how?

3) Could it be something else?

Thanks.

Does it start and stop while you are still turning the key? When you turn the key does it sometimes do nothing?

It will crank then stop for a brief moment like it is either binding or there is too much compression then while still holding the key in the start position to will start the engine. It always cranks over so it is not the solenoid. It also always starts. It just cranks a couple of seconds, stops for less than 1/2 a second, then cranks for maybe 1/4 to 1/2 second and fires up. Weird, huh?
