97 K1500 4x4 Issue

I have searched numerous forums, but have not found an exact match with my problem. I have a 1997 Chevy 1500 with the dash mounted 4x4 switch. The 2HI indicator light works intermittently. When lit I can engage 4HI or 4LO. I have not verified that the front axle is actually locking, but I do hear the transfer case engage. When the light is not working I cannot engage 4WD at all.

 

I read about cleaning and reseating the connector on the 4WD control module, but cannot locate it. Where is the control module on the 1997 model. If this does not correct the problem, what are my next steps?
