How Do You Replace the Steering Bearing

I have looked and looked and havent been able to find any pictures or instructions on how to replace it, if anyone has a link or can show or tell me how to do it I would appreciate it.

first off,steering bearing makes no sence,so clarify that and why do you think you need to replace it ?????

 

and no vehicle is listed either lol

go ahead if you want but i would not or have ever diag'd that ,

 

you have an intermediate steering shaft problem and needs a grease reload or have it replaced ..

 

stop diagnosing your own truck,you are wasting good money that pays for a REAL diagnoses

 

broken record off....for now ...

Im actually actually replacing both, after reading threads that recommended it. I have a clunk, which im sure is the shaft, but then i also have a plastic rattle. I thought it was the coming from the shaft until i messed with this piece and it made the same noise. Thank you for your opinions, but im trying to figure out how to replace it, not get told how bad i am at diagnosing things. If my truck make the same rattle driving down a bumpy road as this piece makes when i mess with it, I would think it was a piece that needs replaced. If there is another thing you think that would cause it, let me know.

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.

 

 

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

 

Notice: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

• The steering column

 

• The intermediate shaft(s)

 

• The steering gear

 

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil’s centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

 

 

2. Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower trim cover using J 42640 .

 

 

 

 

 

Important: A new sensor must come with a pin installed. If pin is not installed, return and reorder sensor. Do not apply force to the sensor and the bearing assembly in a sideways direction.

 

1. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

 

2. Remove the sensor connector by using a suitable tool in order to pull the connector down around the right side of the steering column for accessibility.

 

3. Remove the sensor retainer from the steering shaft.

 

 

 

 

 

Important: When reusing the sensor?(1) you must install a pin into the sensor before it is removed from the steering shaft. By not installing a pin into the sensor it will cause the sensor to lose its centering position and must be discarded. Pin diameter must be in the range of 1?2?mm. Do not remove the bearing adapter?(3).

 

1. If reusing the sensor?(1), remove the position sensor by pulling the sensor straight out from the bearing adapter?(3) until the sensor is almost off the steering shaft?(2). Install a pin into the sensor before removing from the steering shaft?(2). Do not remove the pin until the sensor is re-installed.

 

2. If replacing the sensor?(1), remove the sensor by pulling the sensor straight out from the bearing adapter?(3) and off the steering shaft.

 

Installation Procedure

 

 

 

 

 

Important: Do not apply force to the sensor?(1) or the bearing adapter?(3) in a sideways direction.

 

1. If reusing the sensor, with the pin still installed, align the sensor onto the steering shaft?(2) and into the bearing adapter?(3).

 

Important: If installing a new sensor the sensor will come precentered. Do not remove the pin until installation is complete.

 

2. Install the sensor onto the steering shaft?(2) and into the bearing adapter?(3).

 

 

 

 

 

1. The sensor must be set to approximately 3?mm gap between the sensor and the bearing adapter.

 

2. Install the sensor connector.

 

3. Remove the pin from the sensor.

 

4. Install the sensor retainer onto the steering shaft.

 

 

 

 

 

1. Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

 

2. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.

 

3. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
