Set screw stripping

Bought some aftermarket interior door handlels for my Colorado that are fastened with set screws. The problem is after several uses the set screws begin to strip the door release shaft allowing the handle to turn free of the shaft.Thought about drilling a hole in the shaft for the set screw to sit in, but can not see where a drill would squeeze in cloce enough to drill the hole. Any ideas. Thanks
