2007 GMC Z71 T-CASE ISSUE

I have a 2007 GMC Z71, I drove it home Saturday afternoon and it ran and drove fine. I went to get in it Sunday and tried to back out of the driveway and it acted like it didn't want to move. I gave it a little gas and it made a heck of a cluncking noise from the frontend. I put it in drive and tried to pull forward and the noise happened again. Truck was also jumping. I put the truck in 4x4 and it didn't lock in to 4hi so I switched it to 4low and it sounded like it locked in. I was able to pull forward but not without the noise and the jumping. I put the truck in neutral and tried to push it down the driveway and the truck would not move. it acted like it was in gear. The odd thing is that I have not had any issues out of this truck since I have had it. (Well not with the drive train that is). But I am at a lose right now, any help would be great.

When the truck is in neutral the front shaft wont turn. the fluid looked good and was full. As far as I know there has never been any work done on the case.

i meant the tcase in neutral and rolling ,,,,front driveshaft has to turn in 2 wheel drive with the front tires off the ground ,there is some drag from the rather large clutch pack in the t case and thats it ,,,,,,,you have to have a buddy help looking at front CV joints,,front diff oil condition ,,rear diff ,front shaft u joints etc etc etc

put front wheels off the ground and in 2wd,,,remove the actuator ,turn pinion ,,push in the fork thru the actuator hole to engage the front diff ,,,feel for binding etc

its not much help except to rule out the front diff,,,,,,,,you may have too,,,,,,take it to a shop !!!! lol

please let us know what ya find

Brought it to my shop this morning. I am going to get some of my techs to take a look at it. I'm hoping its just an actuator. I have a had time thinking that the front diff is messed up when there hasn't been any signs of an issue before. Yesterday when I was loading it on the trailer it drove fine. No popping and no jumping like Sunday, I did hear a noise coming from the front end but it wasn't locking in. Ill keep ya posted on what we found. Thanks for the help

So there is no metal in my fluid and the fluid is clean. Is it possible that the actuator could be going out and have the gears inside the case not locked in but not all the way out and be making a rubbing noise? Since the other day I have not had an issue with it jumping. I talked to the GM dealer and they said it would be a week before they could look at it.

could be anything bud ,i cant answer the first question,,,,the tire question ,i just dont know or care about lifted questions

I put the actuator on there just to find out that there is something in the case making noise. I am going to pull it off next week and see what I can find. Do they offer a rebuild kit for it or will it be better to just get another case?

Posted

t case repairs are for parts required after removal and tear down and inspection ,,,,no kits

if the parts come to more money than a case assy,,,,its a no brainer then ,thats how its done

X1.. teardown and inspect...

Repair as necessary.

I'm guessing this is an NQH?

Have fun measuring the clutch pack height.

Seriously.. If it's out, take it to a dealer/rebuilder.
