2004 2500HD, dash lights and radio stay on when the drivers door is opened. my front speakers are out so I dont know if there is a chime or not. Stock radio. thoughts?

your door chime comes through your speakers, from your radio.... just check your front speakers, if both are bad replace. this should fix it.....it did 3 of mine.....

So I have come to the conclusion that I need to replace the whole door latch inside the driver door. Does anyone know where to find one? I have tried LMC, all the major big box auto parts stores, even the local junk yard, no one carries them.

do you have the factory radio in??? if not you will need to buy the radio interface with door chime..... plug and play.... goes between your radio and plug...........that is if you have a aftermarket radio......

yes I have the interface for the chime, when I turn off the truck and take out the key I get three chimes then when I open the door the radio and lights should turn off but they do not, I know the wires are all connected well inside the door so my conclusion is that the built in door switch inside the latch is bad and the whole latch mechanism needs replacing.

guys,!! wouldnt a scanner show data for the latch,?maybe a programming thing?

dont assume the latch is "bad" lmao

Most scanners will not read body codes... only OBDII mandated codes.

You didn't say what scanner you used, but I have tried various scanners that simply do not read body and chassis error codes unrelated to engine or emissions, even though I already confirmed through GM that the truck's modules were storing error codes.

I checked for codes and none were thrown for the latch. but still the door switch is not telling the truck the door is open.

how do you know that the switch is not telling the truck its open ? have you seen the data in the BCM ?

i think you have not

well, I did not personlly check the codes, the dealer did and I dont know what scanner they used. Now your right, I dont know that it is specifically the door latch that is the problem but hey thats why im here asking questions now isnt it. All I nkow is the radio and dash lights stay on when the door is open, that s not supposed to happen.

OK got to the bottom of it, best of all it didnt cost anything but my time. My front speakers went out due to dusty connectors so I had the door panel off to fix that and decided to pull out the latch and investigate. I did so successfully and noticed that the electrical switch/"actuator" (not really an actuator since I dont have auto locks) was only attached to the latch mech. by one screw, the other had broken off. I drilled out the old screw and added a longer one that goes all the way through the housing and it was as good as new. switch works great. Radio and lights go out when the door is open and i get the door chime. here are a couple of pics of the mechanism.
