Lift Question, 2006 GMC 2500HD with 7" BDS

My buddy has a 2006 ext cab 2500HD with the 7" BDS wide track lift kit. He is currently on 35"s with a +18 backspace and would like to run 37's. Currently he is not cranked on this lift and CV's are almost dead flat. So, do any of you have any knowlege if this is even remotely possible with some cranking and taller rear blocks?

 

We found a couple trucks this weekend at 4 wheel jamboree that had this lift and 37's on an HD but they added a small BL, I'm begging him not to put a BL on an HD. My uncle has an '04 HD with this same lift but it is the narrow track and he is cranked to the moon with all cognito up front, hi angle CV's installed, ect but he trailers it, strickly a show truck. My buddy doesn't DD his but it gets driven weekly and doesn't want it to ride like a tractor.

 

Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks for the help bud. He is running toyo MT's in a 35x12.5 on +18 wheels but it is more like running a zero or negative offset because of the wide track kit. I believe the knuckles on that kit push out the front wheels another 1-1.5 inches. He trimmed the front bumper corners a hair but no rubbing in the wheel well at all on his current setup. He goal is to run a 37x13.5 or 37x12.5 and we are concerned that he would need to crank way too much on his current lift.

 

Sad thing is he is kicking himself he didn't go with an FTS 9.5" when he lifted it. My uncle is good friends with the guys from BDS and he got a hell of a deal last year at Jamboree, like 30+% off total price.

13.5's might rub a tad. It's not going to be bad tho...maybe full steer on incline it may catch bad but it won't be bad.

 

I have another friend that ran a levelling kit on an 07 classic with fender cutouts and 37's. Looked bad ass

Ok man, thanks for the info. We were talking about pulling the 37's off my uncle's truck and seeing how we can make them work. Just didn't want to do that until I knew if it would even be possible.

 

I'm with you on the FTS kits, I don't like how they are not NTD kits too. I suppose when you get to 9.5" it is tough to not have torsion drops and keep stability at the front diff.

 

What lift is on yours? I cant remember now?

 

EDIT: Wait I just looked closer, are those just kicker braces on the FTS kit that look like a torsion drop? I have only seen one in person and didn't really look at it that close.

Mines just a rough country 6", running it at 4" to keep my angles perfect so I don't have trouble with boost launching. I've never really heard anything good about them, but never heard anything bad. This lift has 80k miles on it, taken some serious abuse. Everything stays tight, no welds cracked...nothing. It's pretty solid!! Probably endured at least 100 launches @ 15psi on 35's lol...I have HD fab tech tie rods, billet centre link and cognito idler/pitman arm braces as well. Soon ill have BDS trac bars and grizzly locker in the rear!!

That truck of yours is a friggin beast and I love it! With all that torque you are putting down, that heavy of a truck, and that size wheel and tire combo I could see why you would be worried about grenading half shafts. Good God man haha!

 

I am actually planning on going through the front end of my truck here soon, just saving some cash up now. I'd like to do the Cognito UCA's when I do the idler, pittman, tie rod ends, shocks, and steering stabilizer. Goal is to run my current setup in the winter and go to a 295/55/20 on BMF or Fuel wheels in the summer so I'd like about an inch more height. Been looking at SOCAL trucks packages but I feel like I could piece it together for cheaper than that. My front end is tight now but I don't feel safe cranking more than I am right now on stock parts, I guess I'm a bit conservative.

 

Anyway back on topic, I will let you guys know what me and my buddy find out about the 37's on his lift. We may try some things out this weekend and see what happens.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
