6.0 or 5.3 crate motor

Truck is in the shop for a weird knocking noise. Thought it was a flex plate, tech said no cracks and everything looks good on it. Now he is thinking internals. Said it might be a bearing on a cam or crank and by the time they do that it might cheaper for the insurance company to just put in a new motor. I sort of jokingly said time for the 6.0. He replied with a if you want to cover the difference it can be done for not to much more, if that is what needs to be done.

 

Thoughts?

 

Currently it is a 2006 silverado 5.3 vin z with 3.43 gearing, z71 4x4 crew cab, with 94,000 miles on it.

How did he inspect the flex plate? Even unbolting the convertor doesn't allow diddley for room to adequately see. Now if he started it and it and it still did it unbolted... okay. And if its not a bad cat lol. I trust a dealer Tech's diagnosis as far as I could throw the guy. 6 liter will drop in and run okay even on the 5.3 tune whether its an lq4 or lq9. But get it tuned properly lol. Dealer will want more than your truck is worth probably for the engine and install though

He took out the starter and inspection plate used a camera and found nothing. Checked the bolts and everything was tight. Shavings now found in oil. This is not a dealer tech, well he was then opened his own shop. I have an extended warranty on the drive train. Hope that works too.

Well shavings seals the deal. Do the 6 litre... its not worth doing another 5.3. You won't regret the swap. Everything off your 5.3 down to injectors switches over to a 6 liter of any kind. If you can get a new lq9 reasonably do that. The 10:1 compression just makes it that much better. But the lq4 is an excellent engine too and really you won't be able to tell the difference between them tuned.

Another option is the GMPP HO 5.3l crate motor.

A stock lq4 or lq9 will skull drag that thing any day of the week. I mean in just drivability, racing, towing what ever. Don't even waste your time and money.

Listen to this man. I know. I did the swap for an LQ9. It cost me $3020 cash out the door for a LQ9 with 35k and a new vette 2nd servo installed

I appreciate all the input and will look into the lq9 first then the others. Will there be any draw backs like longevity or mileage, that is going to be large enough to cause concerns. I only get 15 on the highway so if nothing else it can't be that much worse.

A stock Ls is a stock Ls. Displacement makes zero difference to longevity. Your transmission... well depends how you drive really.

 

Your mileage will not change if that's all you currently were getting anyway.

I can't hit 17 now, best I've seen is 16.3. Would anything need, or should, be done to my 4l60e?

Shift kit and vette servo. I just have the servo. Been almost a year of hard driving. I cant get the 60e to grenade

Transgo HD2 and a vette servo. Drive it until it grenades. Really a 6 cylinder trailblazers torque convertor is a nice addition too. Gives about a 2600 rpm flashing speed but drives nice and tight otherwise. Exactly what we did to a buddies junker 03 he bought when we dropped in his lq9. Engine went in stock down to clutch fan, air intake and 5.3s old exhaust. Tune and trans work only with 410s was a fun truck.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
