Need opinions on a new 2001HD

A dealer here has 3 brand new 2001 (no typo) 2500HD long bed with the 8.1L and Allison. Thew hitch, they have the "service" bodies on them. The one with all the tool boxes on each side. Also, the truck has air and a radio but that about it. No carpet, electric locks/windows.

My question concerns any quirks the 2001 8.1L/Alli combo might have had. It's a 2WD with the 373 gears.

They are trying to give these things away.

There were some computer progamming issues on the '01 Ally trannies. However the the dealer should be able to update the computer with no problems plus you'll have three years of warranty to stand behind you.

Even though the dealer is "giving" them away, you still need to check KBB or Edmunds to see what they are really worth. Check them out as a used truck with 1k miles on the odometer, and that should give you the true value of the truck. If you werre to buy one, I think you would have to keep it at least 5 years to recover the initial loss of buying a new/2 year old truck.

I checked KBB and NADA. KBB retail was $25,850. The dealer is asking 26,900.

Think again about passing. If you bought the used truck with 1k miles, you would have a 1 year warrantee. The extra warrantee coverage may be worth the $1000 difference.

I'll bet the used one on KBB doesn't have the utility body on it either... those must be worth some money too.

Yea, but the trucks are essentially stripped, so that devalues them substantially. The utility bodies must be worth something, but I doubt you'll find that option listed on any of the used car pricing services, so it may be hard to make a value determination for it. But 27K for a 2 year old stripped truck sounds kinda high to me, new or not.

Not sure this will help any, but....

I traded my 01 2500HD EC Shortbed, 8.1L/Alli, 4x4, loaded LT in when I bought my 03 DMAX two months ago. They gave me $26k for it and it only had 13,750 miles on the clock. Body and paint were in perfect condition, had spray in bedliner, 3m clear bra and Westin nerf bars at time of trade.

If they truely wanted to get rid of those 01's, offer a couple thousand less for one and see if they bite...what's the worst that could happen???

Like I said not sure if it helps, but thought I would tell you what I got for my 8.1L/Alli..
