'04 Denali XL - Noise/Bumping when Wheel Turned

Recommended Posts

When at no or slow speeds and making a hard turn (either left or right), we get 4-8 bumps accompanied by a "straining tap/click" sound until the wheel straightens out. Had it looked at my a mechanic who found "nothing."

Any thoughts? I am pretty mechanical on older vehicles (have swapped engines, rebuilt manual tranny's, etc.) but have only dome basics on this ride. Would like to figure this one out...

Thanks in advance.

It makes the noises when moving and making the turn, from a standing stop, not when stopped and just turning the wheel.

I don't think any of my friends will think kindly of me if I ask to drive over them...

Might be the intermediate steering shaft. It makes noises like that when grease is gone. Solution is to replace it. Not a bad job and costs about $75. Known issue on the gmt800's.

Gpost - Thanks. This is very likely it, so I just ordered the replacement shaft. I will report back once i install. Thanks again for that insight. Bill
