1996 Chevy 1500 4WD not working

I have a auto grand with a manual shift 4x4 that will not engage. At times it sounds and feels like the transfer case is engaging in 4 low however the front axel does not engage. I assume that the hubs are not locking... I've read that there is an acuator that locks the hubs on the front axel but I am not sure if that is the problem. I've also heard a grinding noise at times when moving the shifter. This morning I tried starting my truck with it in 4 hi and it engaged. However I took it off and tried to re-engage it and nothing. Any ideas?

The stock actuator is thermal and they all burn out. There is a replacement electrical actuator available. It's an easy swap. Look for the actuator(it's about the size and shape of a starter solenoid) on the front pumpkin.
