When I went to cable internet access, I installed the Norton Firewall.

About every other day I get an alert that someone was trying to access the "back door" and 9 out of 10 times it is...

Sub Seven / Trojan Horse

I've had several "attempts" from SunnyVale CAL,  NY/NJ area, a few from Canada, and a couple from overseas...

What is a SubSeven Trojan Horse?

A virus; it sneaks into your computer and then takes it over.  It can shut down your computer, delete files and transport files to other locations.

To get specific details on the virus go to Norton's web-site and search for it in their directory.

I love my cable modem but one day I came home and there was a nice little message that said, "all files have been deleted."  The cable comany has since done a few things to keep this from happening and we got a firewall but I still worry about it sometimes.

I've got my cable modem going through a linksys router which says that it acts as a firewall.... i dunno how much truth there is to that but so far no problems w/ hackers and only one virus problem, but that was due to one of my friends plugging his infected computer into the network

Your router has a NAT firewall, it does a pretty good job of keeping people out but I would get another software firewall.  I run zone alarm, and Black Ice on my laptop.  Black Ice is good but it's obnoxious sometimes.  Zone Alarm is the best in my opinion.  As far as all the warnings go, most of the time they are your ISP checking things out, then they are just random people scanning Ip addresses for open ports.  Nothing is really fool proof, but for the generic 15 year old that has nothing better to do, a software firewall will do.  If someone wants to get in they are going to though.

I had a "backdoor subseven trojan horse" blocked this AM from Melborne Australia.

I don't believe it is a virus, but rather another computer searching for an open port like what was mentioned in one of the earlier posts.  My 2003 Norton, has not picked up any viruses on my computer, so I guess I'm OK.

I got a lot of that same activity before installing my Netgear router (also had Norton).

It is normal (sadly), but still alarming when you read the activity log!!!

Anyone out there w/ DSL or cable modem access, regardless of platform or OS, I'd highly recommend some form of intrusion protection.

Buy a cheapo computer and install Linux on it and use the linux Firewall software......  THen put all your computers behind it and your just like a corporate firewall.  YOu should have the maximum protection that way.
