Hey guys,

 

New to the forums and just bought a 2016 Sierra in January.

 

Less than 500 miles on the truck and I was already a hit and run victim today while out for a lovely Valentine's Day brunch with my girlfriend. I live in north Jersey, worst drivers in the country...

 

Knowing this back in December I was tinkering with the idea of investing in a dashcam before I even bought, and of course put it off. :fume:

 

Anyways...I'm looking for a reasonably priced dashcam with motion/bump activated parking mode. Preferably something that has it's own battery source for parking mode and two channel for front and rear. Something simple with 12v power/charging that doesn't involve running wires to the battery, etc. Any reccomendations?

 

Plus if anyone wants to offer some sympthy over the frustration that is hit and run, I'll take that too!

I will say do not buy the Vantrue R2, it has the parking mode with a motion sensor that you mention but I have gone through two of them and they both did the same thing...randomly stop working at least once every time I use it. I will say though their customer service is like no other and they will help you with a replacement or refund immediately.

I have the Blackvue650 2channel, front and rear facing cameras. For the parking mode you should have a separate power supply. Even with power magic pro, or when running power directly from your trucks battery it could drain your battery or cut the power to the cameras when needed. I have the Cellink B battery pack, fully charge it can run the cameras for up to 36 hours. Battery pack fully charges in one hour while driving the truck. Here's a picture of someone backing up towards my truck, luckily they stopped in time.

I was looking at Blackvue earlier, a bit out of my price range and the extra battery pack makes it that much more. Was hoping to keep the whole thing around $200 or so...

 

I'll keep looking, thanks for the help.

I have the Cowan Auto Capsule and absolutely love it. The park mode works great. Camera is clear. Find them on ebay for around $190.

Another from Blackvue, well worth the money...think of it this way...how much is it going to cost to fix your truck or pay your deductible when you get hit? If that outweighs the cost of the camera seems like a no brainer to me.

I have the black view as well. I like that you can access it via the cellphone app. I just need to configure it one day on my new phone lol

I use Garmin front & rear dash cams. Battery power gives 5 hours, but I typically leave them on and plugged into a power source.

I have a DOD Tech LS360W, DOD has the highest quality video out of all dash cams on the market.

 

I don't use a backup source for power. I have a switched installed in my overhead console that runs to a bare wire 12V socket under the dash. I ran the dash cam power cable under the headliner, down the a pillar and behind the dash, plugged it in.

 

I do not trust a shock sensor mode as it can catch to many false positive events, or miss a real event.

 

My dash cam stays turned on virtually all the time. Last time I went away I forgot to shut it off. The truck sat for an entire week recording my garage door. Came back, truck fired right up like always. Anywhere I go, anywhere I park, whether it be for 2 minutes or 2 days, I leave my dash camera on constant record with shock captures turned off. This way I catch absolutely everything and anything.

I would have to agree with others and recommend Blackvue. Put the DR650 in my new truck and love it. Works perfect with no issues so far. Have also heard good things about the DOD Tech camera, but it is only a single channel. Sorry to hear about your new truck.

      2 speed transfer case optional now?

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
