multi function switch trouble

:chevy: i have a 96 gmc p/u that has lost the cruise control and the low beams.i have tested and found the headlight problem to be in the stalk and expect that the cruise problem is that also.i was told this is common.does anyone know where i could find instructions on replacing the multi function stalk?thanks

That might be a PITA to replace .

I think you have to pull the steering wheel off to get to it once thats done there are some size 20 or 25 hex bolts in there

And a damn expensive part I think that one is about 200-250 dollars

I broke mine on my 97 (busted the hazard light switch off) and I just figured I would go with out it once i got the covering off the column i took a look at it and said no thanks :chevy:

K1500 is right I think... I believe you will have to pull the steering wheel.

 

I don't know if the part is quite that expensive though. I know they used to be outragously priced, but I think they are a little more reasonable now.

And I dont have the cruise on mine so I would imagine it would be more for the cruise .

My friend had one replaced on his Lumina a year or so ago, and with labor it was less than $200. He must have bought a used one from the salvage yard...

The steering wheel does not need to come off to get at the switch. It would make it easier, but not nessassary.

 

There are two torx screws that hold the switch on the column inner structure. One is from the top and the other points towards the dash, behind the steerng wheel on the left side, but you should be able to get to this by turning the steering wheel and maybe using a swivle joint on the socket.

 

We usually charge 2.5-3 hrs of labor, plus $200.00 for a new switch from GM (turn,cruise, tilt.)

 

If you take your time, you should be able to do it without a problem. Good luck.:cool:

great,thanks for the help guys.does the wiring unplug from the switch there at the top or do you have to fish the wire?i can get the switch for 170 bucks with my gm discount.the dealers want 330 for the switch and over 200 dollars labor....whew

Don't quote me, but I believe the wiring unplugs...

 

There is most likely a rod that runs down the steering column to another switch for the High/Low beams. Make sure you get that rod back in it's original spot, or your high/low beam switch won't activate.

Hello, I just bought a new multi function switch for my 1998 K1500 Silverado W/Cruise

and it was only $63.00 on EBAY shipping was free and it arrived in 2 Days from the day I ordered it.

The switch looks great and is an exact replacement for the original. My local parts houses were asking between $150 and $200 so I was happy to save almost $100.

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
