2010 Sierra 4x4 z71 Tcase & Rear Diff

Recommended Posts

alright, Ive got a 2010 Sierra 4x4 z71 Crew Cab.

1. ive been doing a lot of searching for what type of Tcase Fluid we need, and am getting mixed results. some say Dexron vi and others say you can only get it from the dealership its autotrac II something or another. the fluid inside looked to have a red hint to it so im worried it may be the wrong kind, as my understanding is the autotrac II is supposed to be Blue?

can anyone shine some light on this for me? do we all have NVG-246 Transfer Cases? i cant see any kind of model# on the tcase just maybe serial numbers.

2. the rear diff seems to be a tad low (its not all the way to the fill hole) maybe this is normal. but if not I would like to replace the seal and fluid. do I use 70-90 gear oil for this? and does that go into the front diff too?

Bonus question: did some of our trucks come with 6l90's? i remember seeing something about an HD tow package in the paperwork and am wondering if that is the difference? how can I check, are the 6l80 and 90 visually different?

1. You use DexronVI in the transfer case (AutoTrac was used in the previous gen trucks)

2. It is suppose to be a little below the fill hole, you would use 70W-90 synthetic axle fluid for both the front and rear axles.

If you check your owners manual it should specify all needed fluids (although it might specify conventional fluid for the front axle, this has since been changed, and GM now specifies synthetic)

3. The 1/2-tons have the 6L80 6-speed transmissions (The HD trucks use the 6L90)

I checked the manual, i may of missed it but it didnt say jack for the diffs. And the tcase only specified volume of fluid but didn't specify a type.

Thanks for your help, this dexron vi, is it red in color?

Lastly, the HD trucks as in 2500hd or did they also make HD versions of the 1500 in 2010?

Dexron will be Red.

HD as in 2500HD and 3500,they didn't make a 1500HD in the GMT900 series trucks.

Heres the excerpt from the owners manual which should help you out for future reference....

Holy hell thanks man, i was definitely looking in the wrong section.

If your still willing to answer questions ive got one more for yah.

Ive got new transmission in the truck, its been in for 10k miles. The place that installed it put some tranny fluid in that is the typical pink color. Do you know of an alternative to dexron VI that is pink in color?

Dexron will be a Red or Pink/Pinkish color, it just depends on how your looking at it (IE-what background you have it on...dipstick,rag,countertop,etc.)
