Any professional Auto Techs on board?

Since I'll be losing my job in TV shortly. I am thinking about a career change.

I've been a "backyard mechanic"/welder for most of my life and even though I know this is very different from being a professional, I like working on vehicles. I was thinking about going to the local Vo Tech School and start taking classes. First to get my PA. State inspection license. Then if that works well, taking more classes, eventually all the classes. The school is certified and will end in me getting AES Certified. Yes I realize I would have to start somewhere lika a lube shop, Wal-Mart (there building two Superstores within miles of my home) or Tire store, etc. But my goal would be to work at a Dealership someday.

Am I being dilusional? Do you think 43 is too late to start a career like this? I don't have any big bills so I could handle the low pay for quite awhile. And my wife says she'll support my decision. The bureau of statistics says the outlook for Auto Techs is very good.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Rich

If you get the right training, you shouldn't have to start at a quick lube. I went to work at a Chevy dealership right out of school. The first year you will probably not make what the other techs make. After you get familiar with the flag times and the cars, you'll do just fine. How many tools do you have? Be prepared to buy a couple of the higher end specialty tools. $$$ I've been doing this professionally for 4 years now and I am currently working for a construction company, fixing everything from power tools to excavators. So if you're willing to take a paycut and your wife supports you, I say go for it.
