Temp gauge?

I was driving home the other day and realized my temp gauge was reading low which its pretty cold out and i only let it warm up for about 10 15 minutes well i got up today to start my truck and when i went out to leave I realized my temp gauge stopped moving and hasn't since it warms up and will idle down so i think its just the gauge so i bought a mechanical temp gauge but don't really know where or how to wire it in without messing with the computer if i take the old sensor out any help is appreciated. Btw its a 2000 gmc sierra 5.3
