Does anyone know exactly what temperature (and where it is mesusred (like at the return line to the cooler or in the pan, etc) triggers "trans fluid hot" on a 4L60E?

Also, what's the difference between "trans fluid hot" and "trans hot...idle engine"?

Thanks

I had not read the "gauge" section of the owners' manual because I do not have a gauge, but that is where most of the answers are:

265 - trans fluid hot

275 - hot trans - idle engine

260 - warnings go off if already on.

Now I just need to know where it's being measured.

The sensor is in the transmission and reads temp for the fluid in the pan. All the NBS have the sensor, but only the 2500 /3500 have the gauge. Incidently if you switch out the cluster with one that has the gauge, it will work without any other hook ups.

I believe the sensor is on the line to the radiator, not in the pan. Look at the lower right corner of your radiator where the tranny line comes out. My 2001 was Tee'd into that line. My new '03 does not have the sensor in that location, so maybe the new ones are in the pan. Guess it depends on the year of your truck. Personally, I think you'd get a better read from a sensor in the pan. Just thought I'd mention it, in case you have an older truck.

The temp sensor in 2003s is part of the valve body in the transmission. I installed a Silverado SS instrument cluster in my 2003 Z71, the trans temp gauge worked without any other work.
