side post terminal batterys

When will the General wake up and fix the most common problem with these batterys?

They are LEAKERS!,

I pulled my battery out of my '01 Yukon to clean the battery tray as It was starting to show some corrosion (Caked white junk) and to my amazement acid was leaking out of the positive terminal (+). The battery had no sign of being weak and the "GREEN Eye" was still green.

The plastic case was not cracked, but rather leaking from with-in the threaded post.

My Yukon has been in service less than 3 years and only 28K miles with the original AC/Delco crapola battery.

I have only bad experience with side terminal post batterys, All of My company Gm Vehicles have had leakers at somepoint in time, usually a cracked case right at one of the post. A friend with a Vete has gone thru 3 with the same problem.

If I had the money I would have gone to a Gel-Cell

I caught the problem early enough before it did any real damage to my Yukon and all I had to do was remove the tray, clean with baking soda, sand blast the tray. I sprayed the tray with cold bond galvanizing paint as a primer and then surface paint black. But it still a P.I.T.A. Plus $ 80.00 for a new battery (not a Delco!)

I suggest everyone check their battery and trays. when I was looking for a used Yukon or Tahoe, Every one I saw had corrosion on the tray to some degree. Being thet the terminals are turned to the firewall it's almost impossible to see if there is leakage of acid until it's too late.

I had the original battery replaced on my 99 Silverado when it wouldn't start one morning last year. The dealer said that the OEM battery had a leak in addition to a dead cell. Fortunately the leak had just started and didn't do any damage to the tray so I guess I got lucky.

Your 01 sounds like it was still under warranty at the time; you probably could have gotten the dealer to replace it under warranty and even talk him into upgrading to the AC Delco gel battery for just a few bucks.

Leaky AC Delco batteries have been a problem in C5 Corvettes and the battery in the C5 sits directly over the ECM!! A big leak there would be an expensive fix :(

I just replaced the original AC Delco battery in my 92 Vette simply becasue it was 11 years old and I didn't want to get risk getting caught on the road with a dead battery. The side terminals on that battery were still clean and no sign of leakage anywhere. Go figure!

WEll I replaced the battery in my 96 and yes the side posts leaked everywhere. Battery box is straight necked fu$$ed up......... Battery cables should be flushed to china, and then like a idiot I bought another side post battery :flag:
