Not going into over drive

Hi, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I'm from the Denver area. I was driving down I-25 and all of the sudden my 04 Sierra 1500 kicked out of od and I couldn't get into 4th gear obviously. I had a little ways to go so I kept going at about 50mph and running between 3 and 4 grand all the way home. I was told about a cylinoid on the transmission that if it goes bad it'll throw the truck into "safe mode." I'm really hoping that my tranny didn't go out. If anyone could help out with some info I'd greatly appreciate it.
