NVG3500 5-Speed

Anyone else with the NVG3500 tranny have a problem with rattle and grinding noises. At low speeds it is very noisy. Also Theres a steady grinding type noise when in neutral at idle. And when I press in the clutch it stops. Then I let it out and it gets loud again. The dealership already said it was the bearings in the tranny so they replaced them all. Didn't do anything. Plus I don't like my service department so I havn't brough it back since. Just want to knwo if I'm the only one or if it's just a noisy tranny.

My NV-3500 and my Dad's both make some rattles, whining in 1st and 2nd and some syncro noise, but they only grind when we miss a shift.

There is some gear rattle in nuetral that quits in about 5 seconds when you push in the clutch.

Compared to older 4 speeds the NV-3500 is downright smooth, slick and quiet, which is why we've never worried about them. They aren't near as refined as a Honda transaxel, but you don't need to worry about it.

Rodger that the 5spd are tons better than the 4spds of the 80's the syncros work and they stay in gear it's nice. Better gear spacing except between the dreaded 2nd to 3rd step. My NV4500 is rather loud too not to worry about it. But walk with your head higher because your are one of the few, the proud, the Men...I mean stick shifters... :wtf:

I am always glad to hear there are others out there like me, you know, people who know what that third pedal is for! I love shiftin gears and burning the rears :chevy:

Anyway, I hear a little noise in neutral with my foot off the clutch and it goes away a few seconds after pushing in the clutch. I dont notice anything while in gear though and wouldnt think it was normal if I did.

I would like to add my problem to this thread though, sometimes when shifting into first gear at a stop sign if I am rolling very slow (1-4mph) or just stopped the shifter gets kicked back at me. It always seems a little tough to get into first gear compared to the other gears at least. I am guessing that the synchro for fist gear is worn? I was thinking about changing to some synthetic fluid also, any recomendations? I have taken to double clutching before downshifting to first at a stop, that makes the shift much smoother. I cant remember if this happens when sitting at a light in N then putting it in first, I think it does sometimes but overall its very rare.

no worries if I don't get my truck into first all the way it will push it out of 1st and 2nd sometimes. I just double clutch and tach the motor a little to help the synros' do their job. Seems that all are trucks have 1st and rev. problems with sticking in gear.

I have been having the same problems in my 98. The noise is not loud in neutural, but it is when under load (starting form a stop) in 1st & 2nd gear. sometimes in 3rd if under heavy load, It's been doing this for a year & a half. Someone did tell me it's the clutch, but I'm sceptical.

Thanks K1500, But all I've done to it is paint the grill to match, & remove all the lables, When this engine goes, I'm thinking of putting a V8 in it.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
