Anyone know of or use a good knife sharpener mainly for sharpening kitchen type knifes? I bought a new stainless steel knife set last xmas and am having a hard time keeping them sharp with the 'stick' type sharpener that came with them.

Thanks

DO you have an Academy (sports & Outdorrs) near you? Last time I was there they had a decent one for 10+- bucks(handle looking one), my bro is still using his, been 2 years. It's not the best but it works quick

Not familiar with an "Academy" SnakeEyes. I actually saw some in Cabela's catalog not too long ago. I'm thinking maybe an electric one. If someone can recommend a good model, I'll look for a deal on eBay.

Is there anything more frustrating than trying to put a good edge on a good quality stainless steel knife? I.ve got a Ken Onion Kershaw knife that I carry wherever I go. The steel is so good that it's hard to sharpen. I visited a friend in Palm Desert a couple weeks ago and we were touring his shop. I spied a grinder that was really a quality knife sharpener. On the left side was a 12" very fine grade stone that was automaticlly watered as the stone turned. It's speed was slow compared to most grinders. On the right side of the unit were two finishing wheels. One was like leather and the other was like a hard rubber . He used dye on the cutting edge then set the knife in a jig. after just a few passes overt the wheel the edge was restored. He dressed the edge then I gave it the test. It shaved hair from my arm. I dont think the knife was that sharp when I bought it.

I didn't ask how much the machine cost but I'm going to get the details on it next trip to the desert. That could be one of those must have tools for a guy like me who is no good with the manual wet stone sharpening method.

That setup sounds exactly like what my Dad has. He runs a small sharpening business on the side. It's more of a hobby for him than anything, plus he picks up a few bucks! :flag:

Thanks for the tips on the Lansky setup too.  Anyone know about how much the kit runs?  Thanks :flag:

They run about $35 for the regular whetstone deluxe kit and about $70 for the diamond stone kit..I bought the deluxe kit and purchased a diamond stone seperately......Click here for prices
