Installing an alarm

I am going to be installing an alarm in my 2001 Suburban and my girlfriends 1997 Suburban in a couple weeks. I installed several alarms in my time, nothing in anything newer than a 1994 Saturn though. I will be installing the alarm, keyless entry, auto start, and automated up and down on the windows on both vehicles. I figure the 97 should be pretty easy, similar to the Saturn. It doesn't have stock keyless entry so I figure installation should be straight forward.

The one I'm a little concerned about is my 2001. It has the stock alarm system plus all the modern electronics. Here are a few question I have:

Is there anything I should look to avoid?

Any special procedures?

Should I disable to stock security system?

If so, How?

Is it ok to tap into the wires for the door lock/unlock where they come out of the body controller?

About auto-start, where are the wires easiest to tap into to get that to work.

I know between me, my brother and friend we could figure everything out. Given time and having the factory service manuals. But getting info from someone with experience and who has doen this before would save tons of time and headaches.

This is the tech sheet for a 2001 GM truck, that I got from Circuit City. It should also work for the 2002's. The truck uses PASSLOCK II for the factory security. I recommend using a DEI modual to bypass the Passlock system. I think its a DEI #555L or a #555T. just check with your local Circuit City.

NOTES;

Vehicle equipped with PASSLOCK II passive anti theft system. Refer to alarm diagram before remote start install.

*The 4.3 V6 engines uses a single coil on top of the engine, tach wire is white. The V8 engines use a coil on each cylinder, each with a 4 pin plug. Each plug contains a black, brown, and pink, as well as a 4th wire which changes color for each coil. This 4th wire can be used as your tach referance, set you remote starter for a 1 cylinder signal.

***Tan(drivers door) is in the 16 pin plug on the far right and the blue/white(pass. door) is in the 24 pin plug in the center of the modual.

****Located in the 16 pin plug on the far right. Pulse the tan wire at the same time as the lock wire to arm the factory alarm. Pulse groung to the lt green wire to disarm the alarm when remote starting or unlocking.
