transmission problems

2005 Trailblazer ext drives fine for a couple miles than transmission goes into neutral and won't move I can shut it off and cycle the shifter thru the gears and start it and go again but only for a mile or less and it does it again..  any ideas what it could be? and how do I check it out? thanks
