Auto door locks

Does it bug anyone else that you have to unlock your door to get out?

You have to carry a key in case you happen to want to get something from the passenger door.

On an previous truck I had the dealer disable this while it was still in warranty. They connected to GM by modem and changed the computer.

Does anyone know of any other way to do this without going to a dealer?

I dunno offhand how to do it. but I wish my truck did auto lock when started. i can see both ways though..and everyone has their own personal preferences. i wouldn't think it'd be tooooo tough to change though.

Read your owners manual. There should be a section in there on how to disable it.

On my 2002 silverado the doors automatically lock when I put it in drive and they unlock when I put it in park...I like for them to lock, but sometimes I don't want them to unlock when I put it in park because I am not getting out....oh well! Also, if after putting it in drive and the doors lock I decide to manually unlock my door while moving, as soon as I re-close it it locks immediately...another example is if I stop and a passanger manually unlocks his door and gets out, that door will re-lock when I hit 15 MPH

On the new body style trucks, the auto door lock is programmable (maybe not the '99s). The '00-'01 trucks have certain combo's you can choose and the '02 and up trucks have even more possibillities. Your manual should explain how to go through the sequence to change the program.

I did forget to mention that it was a '99 Silverado regular cab.

Some of you were helpful in spite of the lack of info. Especially Mcourson who put me onto an article about a R&D kit for auto door unlock written by Mountaineer Tom.

I like auto locks, but only if they auto unlock when I want out!

I replaced my BCM with one out of an 00.

Now my autolocks are programmable. 4-different modes I think (one of them being no autolocks at all).

You can find 00+ BCM's fairly cheap on Ebay. I don't think I've seen one go more than $25.

Nah, it's an easy swap. All you need is a 7mm socket and screwdriver or ratchet.

It takes a little patience to program the BCM to work with your ignition switch (anti-theft) but that's not so hard either. I forget exactly the procedure, but it involves cranking the engine for a few seconds, leaving the truck on until the SECURITY light quits blinking, and then repeat until one of the times you crank, the truck will start. Then you're done.

Mountaineer Tom,

I read your article on R&D Auto Door Unlock. I was ready to order but I hear that R&D is no longer in business. Do you know if this is true and if so is there another kit that will work?
