transfer case swap?

is it possible to swap out my transfer case from my '96 Z71 with one from an older chevy ie; early 80's late 70's? I am asking because i want to do an ifs to straight axle swap and have a front-end and transfer case readily available from an 84 chevy. as we all know the "pumpkin" on my year truck is on the driver side and i would have to use a diff out of a ford and swap all the knuckles and stuff out to match my gm 6 bolt pattern. If i am able to use the gear out of the 84 donor then this would make my life a little easier.

You would probably have to swap the tranny too or atleast use an adapter. Late 70's/Early 80's the transfer case of choice was the bomb proof NP205.
