Rack and pinion

So I was told I had to replace my rack and pinion on my 97 gmc 4x4 and no one has them anywheres, and asked was it a coversion. so my question is did that year come equipped with a rack and pinion or a stearing gear ?

This is based on having a 5.7 liter engine.
