Most popular engine in North America?

Found this ad in the new Wards. It is from Mahle, a major tier one supplier of engine components to all the OEM's. Anyway, they tallied engine production for the calendar year 2003 for North American light duty engines. And here are some interesting numbers (i thought):

GM Truck:

5.3L LM7 - 1,018,729 total

4.8L LR4 - 273,839 total

4.3L L35 - 367,032 total

6.0L LQ4 & LQ9 - 409,104 total

GM Car:

2.2L L61 & L850 - 769,535 (cavs, ion, malibu, grand am, etc)

3.4L LA1 - 748.670 (minivans, impala, monte, etc)

Ford Truck:

4.0L 99E - 456,411 total (explorer, ranger, etc) made in germany...

5.4L 99L & 99R & NA (3vpc) - 692,150 total (f150, expy, navi, etc)

Various:

5.7L NA (dodge hemi) - 262,580 total (ram, ramhd)

2.4L N/A (honda 4 banger) - 602,157 total (accord, rav4, etc..)

The ad said these were based on:

North American built vehicles: CY2003 production plus export output

Imports: 2003 north american sales

Soooo, the most popular engine in North America is the....5.3L OHV GM!

I know I luv mine and as soon as I can unload my wifes 3.4L Venture POS, I WILL purchase a 5.3L Tahoe.

As far a mileage, performance, noise, and (so far) reliablility this is as good a drivetrain as I have ever driven.

I see their 5.4L on there, but where does Ford's 4.6L fit in there. It gets used on the trucks and other carlines. I would expect its production to be right up there with the GM 5.3L.

4.6L 99Y - 35,726 total (DOHC w/4vpc used in the Mach1 and Cobra)

4.6L 99W/99X - 151,226 total (SOHC used in the F150, expy, and big vans)

4.6L 99W/99X - 261,371 total (SOHC used in the vic, towncar, and stang)

4.6L 99H - 120,648 total (SOHC used in the aviator, explorer, merc)
