Tranny Temp gauge?

Recommended Posts

Anyone put a tranny temp gauge in there truck?

Were do you put in the sender? Pan? Lines?

How difficult is this to put in?

I'm not sure were I would put the gauge? The pillar is shaped kinda different and has the tweeter in it, so I'm not sure if thats going to work?

I was thinkin about the pod that goes on top of the steering column?

Or maybe put it in the console, inbetween the DC plugs.

I believe that all newer trucks come with the temp guage built in..You can get a escalade cluster (which has the tranny temp guage) and hook it up and the guage works properly...

Hey, Glenn! No Cummins in your garage, eh? ( I saw your posts on SW). Anyway, what the other guy was trying to say is that the sending unit is already on the truck from the factory. Get an instrument cluster with the temp gauge and just plug it in and drive. Just make sure the cluster is compatible with your year of truck.

Also, do a search here. Lots of info.

Hmmm

So I would just need the gauge with the needle from the dealer or Ebay. And, I was planning on intalling white face gauges so, that shouldn't be a problem.

Or, do I need an entire cluster(which would be expensive, and would it read the right mileage?

Thanks

You could get the new cluster.. which esclase clusters run probably more than $200 or just get the guage and see if you can find which wire is hooked to the sensor.. (dont know how hard that would be)... just do a search on ebay for escalade cluster.. and yes you can get the correct milage programmed in..

Ok, I found the clusters on JP Customs

I like the SS cluster better then the Escalade cluster.

$335 isn't that bad. Plus a lot easier install. I broke a needle when I put them in my Jeep. So, not having to do that would be a big plus.

Found the same thing on EBAY for $248

Hmmm...

Anybody know what the color the backlight is on the SS? Or have a pic of what it looks like at night?

Stylin' Concepts carries the kit just to put the temp gauge into your existing cluster. It is about half the price of getting an entire cluster. One note though, you will want to have decent soldering skills. In the kit, you would have to solder the actuator to the cluster board and one light.

Otherwise, getting an entire cluster is the easiest way to go.

It can be done "just adding" the temp guage to the stock cluster

Here is a website that has the parts and instructions

http://usspeedo.com/trans.html

I elected to purchase a whole new cluster from a 2500 series with the guage and do the plug and play. Cost more but it removed the human error on my part.

Here is the main web page look for the plug and play cluster prices are really goo when compared to other on-line parts house.

I'm been toying with the idea on a guage pod I saw the goes on the front pillar, either a two pod or a three pod. Saw it in som magazine I think for $45 for the three guage pod. You can supposedly get it in your interior color.

Was think about the tranny temp guage, maybe an air fuel guage and don't know what for the third guage.

I installed the tranny temp kit from US Speedo. I actually purchased the kit from one of their distributors for ~$130: www.stylinconcepts.com

The install was fairly simple. You definitely need some decent soldering skills, patience, and tools (small-tip soldering iron, etc). I'm glad I saved the money and went with this kit -- it functions and looks just like factory.

The advantage of the Escalade cluster is the nicer look of the overlay. The US Speedo kit just includes a replacement factory-look overlay.

Important note: At the time I purchased the kit, Stylin Concepts didn't really advertise this kit, and even one salesperson wasn't aware they stocked it. I had to call a second time to find someone that knew anything about the US Speedo tranny temp kit. I'm guessing it's not a big seller for them because of the skills required for the install.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
