Diesel injector pump dying

Recommended Posts

I'm expecting the dealer to tell me tomorrow my injector pump is nearly dead. He already told me the part is $1400 and the whole job with labor is $2000. It was blowing lots of black smoke and pulling very poorly under medium load. And it has developed the annoying habit of cutting off for no reason. Two questions:

Is that a reasonable price?

and

At 227,000 miles, am I better off just to get a whole rebuilt engine?

This is a 1996 6.5L diesel in a Suburban. The truck is in great shape otherwise and worth the investment either way. I just don't want to waste money I don't have to.

That is a pretty reasonable quote.

I would replace the injection pump alone not the entire motor.

The motor is going to run you in the $6k range installed, and I feel is not necessary. Your motor has another 500k miles left on it with good service habits.

Hope this helps.

Hey you did good getting over 200,000 out of your IP over at The Diesel Page it said if you get 150,000 out of IP your doing real good. I would change out the injectors too unless it was done within last 75,000 miles. With new injectors and new pump yopu should be good for another 100,000 miles.

Also If I was you I would get on the phone with Bill Heath from Heath Diesel and look inot getting a PMD Issolator. The PMD is a Pump Mounted Driver and they are the weak link in the IP. The pumps themselves will go many times well over 100,000 miles but the electronic modual mounted on the pump in the V or the engine breaks down due to heat over time. Heaths set up has a cable extension PMD and heat sink for remote mounting and keep them cool. I put on on a "cooler" in the engine compartment and it craok after 30,000 miles so I went this route. The good thing if you keep the one on the pump you have it for a spare.

I think I would call around and buy a pump elsewhere and take it somewhere besides the dealer to get it fixed as that is where you will pay the most. Also at 227.000 mile it would not hurt to go through everything if you plan and running it several more years. Do not get it done at dealer though, find a competent diesel shop if you cannot do most of it yourself. .

A new pump can be had for about $1,000 or less rebuilts for $750 or so. $600 bucks labor is a bit steep what is their shop rate? Also check GM Parts Dirrect on the internet. Some dealer will match their prices which is about 40% off list. So maybe you can save a few hundred buy check with them and printing the price. Aslo do that with injectors as I bought new Bosh off the internet for $35 each.
