No major differnce I am aware of (I read what they were but I have forgotten) as I recall they are mostly a refinement of the electronic controls for it and maybe a very mild beef up. Nothing to rave about either way.

The 4L80E is rated to a maximum engine torque of 440 lb-ft

The 4L85E is rated to a maximum engine torque of 460 lb-ft

Basically, the 4L85E was beefed up to handle the torque of the 8.1, which is what it is usually coupled with or with the HO 6.0 in the Denali, although it is hard to figure out all the combinations.

Old THM400's were suposed to be rated a 400 ftlbs ot input torque. They handle a lot more with ease. (they made a THM 375B, a 425 & a 475 too )
