Cat back dual exhaust

I just had a Gibson Cat Back installed on my 04 Z-71 Burban, I was looking for a little deeper tone - but still mellow - it's about perfect. Only problem, when the people installed it, the Stainless tips are too close to the molding on the Z-71 and is melting it.

I just noticed this and am bringing it in tommorrow - I am assuming they can fix this rather easily - but if anyone has any reccomendations - I am all ears.

Byt he way - she definitely picks up a little quicker than before the system was added.

I have a MAGNAFLOW Cat-Back Duel system (#15792) that I got from www.hottexhust.com, I LOVE this system. My truck is a ECSB '03 with 5.3L and 3.37 gears. The only thing I wish was diffrent-better is the sound in the cab between 55 and 60MPH, a bit of a drone but not bad. Thats at like 1800RPM. At 60-80 I would say it only requires you to turn up the radio one notch to get the same volume. The idle tone is perfect, reving tone is just mean sounding. Even my wife likes it! As dose everyone else that has hurd it. I hope I was helpfull.

I have the Flowmaster 2 I got from Summitt. I like it cause it doesn't really bother you on the highway but is quite a bit deeper tone.

My mechanic sent me to a small exhaust shop for some prices today and I came up with this:

Magnaflow cat back sytem (3" single to 3" duals) insta;lled for $319

Good price?

I would not do dual 3" pipe.

I'm trying to decide between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2.

2.5" is the biggest I'd go.

I've got quotes of $300 and $350 so far. This is 3" in, 2.5" out duals with 3.5" Chrome slash cut tips.

Wont I gain power by going to the larger pipe?

What about mpg?

The larger exhaust will reduce the backpressure too much. These Vortech engines require backpressure to create low end power and torque.

Well, in a sense, yes, you gain power, but depending on how free flowing the muffler is and the bigger pipe diameter you go with, you alter the power curve more and more. You really don't "lose" power, it's just you alter power curve. Bigger isn't always better, don't assume it is. The smaller diameter pipe, the more quality the sound will be and more low end torque you will retain. 2.25" will be fine. you MIGHT notice a slight loss, but nothing bad

Alright then, let me ask this:

I want to modify my exhaust (cost effective)

What is my best solution to adding power to help tow a 5th wheel?

Posted

The best option for the $ to improve power is by getting a custom tune. You most likely already know that folks around here swear by westers...I prefer Nelson. Regardless, a custom tune and your dual exhaust will work great together and help your truck pull with greater ease.

Right on, but shouldnt I get all the aftermarket work done to the truck first and then try for westers? that way they can calculate all of the changes made?
