tailgate cables

Has anybody heard if they have stared the recall for the tailgate cables yet? Both of mine broke last night when I opened it up. :banghead: I called my local dealers parts dept. and they are 14.70 a piece. he said he wasn't sure if the recall is in effect yet but if it wasn't they would just reemburse me for them later so its not that big of a deal, just a little curious.

I know in my area, they are waiting for the new SS cables before they start the recall, but if one breaks, the customer is to bring the truck in and they will put on a new one and then replace it with the SS when they come in.

I just went to the dealer, they told me I had to make an appointment and they would replace them for free. Then when the new one come in "Late Summer" then I would have to make another appointment for those. They wouldn't just 'give' me a pair and let me put them on myself, it they did that I would have to pay for them with not reiembursement. Oh Well

Forgive my ignorance but what is the cable issues? Rust, bad manufacturing? Are all vehicles affected including 2004s. Thanks for the info. that's why I come here.

Did you guys get the recall letter yet? I got mine in april but its such a pain to bring it in for just that, that I havent even botherd yet

Talked to my dealership yesterday about it. They said they are replacing the cables that are broken only. GM has supposedly not came up with a fix for the problem and that they are working on the matter diligently. If they are having such a hard time fixing broke tail gate cables, then I have lost all faith in them having the ability to fix any other problem that arises

Autozone, NAPA has replacement cables for like 7 bucks each. I've only seen my pre-recall letter warning me to be careful. Funny thing GM.. Something so obvious and I get a letter, but a defective distributor design, I get nothing but towed 3 times?

I got the letter and they are supposed to let me know when to come in for the stainless cables too. SJSPOR- I hear you about the distribututor, it cost me 479 for a new one on my 02 and they just gave me a blank look when I asked what was wrong with the old one. I have signed up with the complaint on some consumer web site, I hope this turns into a class action suit soon. RW

(PS. See the earlier thread about my problem)

The galvanized steel cables were rusting underneath the insulators and snapping. I've even seen this on an S-10 or two but I don't think there's a rcall on it. If yours break now, they will replace them with the old style cables. 3rd quarter 2004 they will start replacing all cables with stainless steel ones. Until then, they say just don't put any weight on the gate. Kind of a BS statement to say to a truck owner, eh?
