I need a new rearend for a peg-legger

well i have a 4.8L with a 5 speed in an 04 reg cab with 3.73 gears and i was just looking to switch to a lsd rear for performance only i dont want a locker its not for towing or anything i just want more acceleration, i was wondering what lsd unit to use and what ratio i was thinkin maybe 3.92 or maybe even 4.10 but i am also curious of what kind of mileage i would get in these setups.

Well,if you're looking for performance only,and I mean no other reason than stop light to stop light or finishing the 1/4 screaming go with 4.56 gears.You'll definitely be able to tell a difference but I wouldn't do this unless I was making a light to light runner only.Your mileage won't be pretty with this set up if you're going to be looking to jump out quick,probably won't be pretty regardless of how you drive it.

 

If you're looking to jump out quick and still have good power across the board while somewhat maintaining your driveability,4.10's will work just fine in your truck.That 5 speed would respond well to those gears on the low end and still retain some of your normal driving abilities.

thanks 4.10's sound reasonable but what posi unit should i get and nothing that is gonna cost an arm and a leg i dont need anything tough cuz im not towing just something that will help put two stipes down the road instead of just one and do it well

Eaton works good,so does a Detroit or even an E-Z Locker.You'll get opinions all over the spectrum on that case so the best you can do is ask around local performance shops.

 

Personally,I would probably go with a Detroit but the other 2 would definitely suffice as well.

I too have heard good things about the Eaton. You might see an Auburn unit here and there, but it's not rebuildable, and the Eaton is.

I've been looking around for the same type of setup, and thought you might wanna check this deal out on ebay... Everything I've read seems to think the Eaton unit is good stuff, as well as the "Drivetrain Specialists" Ring and Pinion...

I'm probably gonna go with a setup like this for my 4.8L/3.42Rear... swapping to a 3.92 or 4.10 ratio.

If you don't mind a little noise, go with a lock rite, or detroit EZ locker. These ratcheting style lockers go for under $300. Call up Randy's Ring and pinion and they'll set you up. www.diferentials.com
