Torque Management

Thinking about getting in on the Westers Group Purchase.

I was wondering about reduction or removal of Torque Management. I definately want it reduced, but should it be eliminated? Obviously GM had a purpose for it since it is there in the first place?? If it is, will it cause harm or shorten the life expectancy of the Auto tranny, transfer case or rear end? I want to get as much gain as possible with this upgrade, BUT I don't want to shorten the life span of my components OR introduce the possiblity of destroying them.

No, I don't drive like an idiot, but there will be times when I will want the floor pan under my right foot to be a "little bit" deeper! :jester:

For those who have done it, or evey Tbyrne, please chime in, I want to get in on this purchase.

Thanks! :)

I had it removed from my truck. No problems other than my tranny going out a month ago. :jester: 2nd gear was destroyed, did it while towing a 20ft trailer with 4 or 5 ATV's on it, can't remember. But this is probably due to having 35's with the wrong gearing at the time. I've since added 4.56 gears and love it. I noticed a difference in driving the first time it took off after putting in my Westers, not sure if that was from removing TQ man. or if that's just part of the "improved" shifting I asked for. But either way, I love the way it drives now! Chris

I had mine removed. I like it a lot better.

No cutting out at full throttle. That is BS IMO.

I like the improved shifts for sure.

I still wish my truck was stick though. But GM won't put a stick behind the 5.3.

I love the truck/engine, but really don't care for autos.

Lyndon leaves just enough in to be safe with a stock tranny. He knows what he is doing. Chose "remove most all" on the order form at torque management and you will be fine.

I was pondering, Is there any way to remove the TQ Man. with a predator. I have been in contact but no answer back from tech. I really didnt notice it untill I put my mods on. the TQ MAN SUCKS :) but I cant afford to get a westers now or have the down time. I like the performance tune but like I said hate the TQ MAN. :jester:

Thanks Butch, I have been considering Nelson's and Wester's for quite some time and was actually leaning towards Nelson's, but the price is the huge swing for me on this one.

If I remember, you have had both??

I am not a racer, but I want my truck to drive a lot better than it does now.

Thanks everyone! :jester:

OKAY the predator does not remove it all but does remove a good portion of it. talk to them today and they said give it a good day of driving to take full effect :jester: seemed to be working okay but guess the computer has some learning to do. What is the learn time for the pcm's in the 2004's

The Predator DOES remove torque managment, below is a reply directly from Diablosport R&D. Plus, they provided a custom tune via email for free.

The predator removes the TM, it does it in the regular tune you put in.

mark, how did you get the custom tune for free? I want One. Your truck is a 2001 does it have the torque managment like the 04's??? I have the program for the download of a custom tune hope I can get lucky.

Predator does remove some torque management, don't think all of it. I definately know that I can light my brand new 35's with the Predator in when I couldn't light the 285's I had prior to the Predator from a stop light.

To get a "custom tune", all you need to do is e-mail a tech over at Diablo sport and tell him what you are looking for. I did mine the same day I got the unit and in about 15 minutes he got back to me with my customs. I worked with Johan. Actually after you make initial contact, you send him a copy of the original tune from the truck which you download into the Predator. Then you need to get an ac adaptor from Radio Shack (or who ever) and a nine pin serial cable (had one sitting here at work) On the Diablo website there is a download for the program you will need to use for your computer to talk to the hand held. Download the copy of the original truck tune to your PC and then e-mail that file. Diablo modifies it and then e-mails it back to you which you put back into the hand held and then follow the normal instruction for downloading the program to the truck. Really quite simple. The whole process probably takes less than 15 minutes (not including the time it takes for Diablo to send the program back to you). Also if your wondering, I already asked, the original truck tune is still in the handheld, unmodified. All you actually do is overwrite the Diablo factory tune (the tune that came with the hand held) with a modified one.

I actually have two programs on my computer. I have one for the stock 3:73 gears with the 35's and one for the 4:56's I'm planning on getting. Had him set both up at the same time so as soon as I get the gears I can just grab the new program from the pc and put it into the truck.

I know a lot of guys are going with the Westers but for my use, this does everything that I need. There is a definate increase in the power and performance, I got my speedometer recalibrated for the tires and gears I'm running, and bumped the speed limiter up a little.

Side Note: I was only going with the 35" tires so it was no big deal for me, but I think the max tire size adjustment you can run with a Diablo is 36" and it might throw the ABS light on. I researched this before I bought it but I know I would probably only stick with the 35's so no problem for me.

No I haven't had a Nelson's tune but hear good things about them. I have had both a Hypertech and a Superchips in this truck before my Wester's tune. They don't even come close to the Wester's tune. Even the 87 octane Wester's tune was way better than both of them. The 93 Hot tune is unbelievable!

The biggest deciding factor to me was Wester's Lifetime warranty, lifetime upgrades and best of all LIFETIME full price credit toward the tune for my next truck, and the next one, and the next one..........

Just courious about the life time credit....how does it work? If you were to sell your truck do you need to pull the Wester PCM and replace it with a stocker? Does Wester provide you with the stocker and then you send him the Wester PCM and the new truck PCM which he will reprogram the new PCM and send back to you?

I emailed johan @ diablosport.com for the custom Predator tune - quick, easy, and can still make my own tuning tweaks to the custom program as well as revert back to stock ... btw I got my Predator on ebay for a really good price, and it was brand new.

    • On the subject of OLM, Gm's OLM tool may be more "informed" than others brands. I recall OLM's in mid-2000's Chrysler products literally counting down a set number of miles. That's all the OLM appeared to be.    I would actually expect GM to be able to explain the parameters that their OLM takes into account from a high level. No, I would not expect them to disclose their software coding or data analysis around their parameters.   So we're talking about two different topics, so to continue the subject on the other one, I'd be curious to know how much "standard particulate matter" in fresh oil is able to be filtered at first start by a fresh oil filter. How much particulate matter is enough to "matter"?   I.e. how much of a "lever" do we think this equates to (variability in particulate content, in fresh oils, between different makes/brands, some which filter less, and some that filter more).   We can say that more particles = more wear = shorter engine life as a logical statement and use that data with a little marketing to scare people into selecting a more refined/filtered oil. Using a similie, is this like deciding to forego two alcoholic drinks in a lifetime because we're worried about the potential impact on lifespan? Are there numbers which translate the ISO test results into a quantifiable increase in wear for a given engine/use case?
    • I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually recalibrate the speedometer it just changes the wheel speed sensor inputs to the computer. The truck still thinks it has stock tires.
    • I apologize, I missed this post, at risk of going off CURRENT TOPIC.   I'm not saying it is BS, I'm questioning how much information is being held back. GM is NOT going to spell out exactly every parameter in the algorithm. Liability, intellectual property, etc.    I'm not naive enough to believe that it is as simple as revolutions, coolant temperature, miles, time; are you?    I don't do irrational either, and boiling the OLM down to four simple values that I could code in an afternoon (I'm not a coder) is irrational - unless it suits your agenda to ignore it.
    • Chris 21 I appreciate your constructive response. !!  😉😉😉   The 6.6 is gas.  Correct me if I’m wrong but by recalibrating the speedo you’re correcting the shift points of the transmission on these trucks.?.
    • That is a huge misconception.     Bigger does not always equal safer.  Modifying does not make it safer either, with exceptions.   Think of this.  Your truck in stock form is capable of emergency maneuvers, proper stopping distances, its handling is designed around the factory wheel/tire packages, etc.   37s and a lift?  Now you've affected your braking distances, handling and ride control.  You've raised your center of gravity higher.  Your front visibility is now obstructed more than stock, same for your rear.  Does it look cooler?  Yes.  Does it now work as good as it did from factory on road?  NO.       As for my mention of exceptions?  Say you had a sedan or crossover.  They typically come with all season tires.  If you swap out for a performance all season or a summer tire, you improve your car by lowering its stopping distance (better braking because of traction) and improve the handling (regular and emergency) of the vehicle.  That is an actually improving modification.  My old 2019 LD 1500, I ran UHP all season tires on 20in wheels in a factory offered size.  It improved all aspects of how it drove over the Duratracs it came with from the factory in the stock 18" tire.
