fuel pump bad????

Well guys, I have not driven my truck all week. When I got in it today it ran rough and the SES light was on. However, I did notice that the fuel pump was unusually load. I drove the truck home, at first it was rough but then ran ok. When home, I scanned it with my Aktron scanner and it read P0300 code, I cleared it and it is now ok. I also replaced the fuel filter because I intended to change during my last oil change but ran out of time. To make a long story short, the fuel pump just does not sound right, should I just plan on changing it or what? The last thing that I want to do is have the fuel pump go and have me sitting by the side of the road like my last truck did (expensive tow bill + repair). I am thinking about just buying a new one @ Gmpartdirect.com since I have to place an order for a 4WD switch for my brother anyway. This being said, does anyone have the a part # for the aforementioned fuel pump. As always, any help is appreciated!!!!

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Regular fuel filter changes (every 20k miles or at least once a year) and keeping the fuel tank as full as realistic are the secrets to long fuel pump life.

A clogged or partially clogged filter can cause both the P0300 and the feul pump noise. Change that first.

My own point of view is that the fuel pump isn't bad until it stops pumping fuel.

No sense dropping the $400 now if the pump will last another two years.

take the bed off the truck to get at the fuel pump.you wil need 4 people to help you move it to read far enough to get access to tank.you have to disconnect the fuel filler pipe and electric going to tail lights.this is way i do it at garage. take care

I just went thru this same problem........my fuel pump gave off a high pitch noise I could here in the cab over my dual exhaust at idle. I changed the fuel filter & about 5 days later my fuel pump went out. I changed out my fuel pump with a replacement from O'reillys for $290(for 98 GMC, 5.7 vortec). The GM dealer wanted $572.00 for the factory replacement pump for mine. I took out the old pump called Walbro's........I will be sending him the motor off my old one so they cam match it to one of there replacement pump motors, that will only cost about $105.00 to $125.00. I changed out mine by unbolting the bed, then I placed foild cardboard between the rear bumper & bed corners. Then me & my wife lifted the bed like a dump truck behind the cab at which my daughter placed a 30" 2 X 4 butted against the cab on the framerail with the other end holding up the bed. For safety reasons I placed another 30" 2 X 4 on the rightside of the truck too. At this point I had total access to my gas tank. The swap took about 3.5 hours. The only 2 tools I had top buy was a plastic collar tool to disconnect the gas lines & a hand pump to pump gasoline out of the tank. I bought the typical kerosene pump used to fill kerosene heaters. The gas line tool was puchased at Autozone for $10.00 in a kit the came with 5 other pieces. The tool was hard to get at first but I figured it out.........you have to slip it on at the 3 or 9 oclock postion, then rotate it until it slips further down under gas line collar. Push the gas line up on tool then push tool back toward gas line collar and VOILA ..........its off. Fellows at this point its a reverse process...................hopes this helps. The part # is kinda hard to give since they have to match it to the 3 letter code on the pump. Mine was a "GAV" code.........which was seen after liftring the bed & wiping off the top of the fuel pump. Later..........
