AutoTrac is a clutch type unit that would not stand up to the possible abuses of an HD truck. The LD 1500 and 2500 are fine with Front Drive Shaft Clutch Actuation.

I had a lifted 1500 before and the AutoTrac turning the front drive shaft ALL the time drove me nuts. I am much happier with my new HD.

If you had the driveshaft turning in 2WD than there was something wrong with your transfercase or controller. The drive shaft shouldnt be turning in 2WD only when when autotrack is on. :lurk:

The Front Drive shaft gear on the NVG 246 (AutoTrac) transfer case still leaves "some" clutch pressure on the front drive shaft. That is why AutoTrac is such a BIG DEAL when lifting a vehicle. Ever notice when looking at Suspension Lift Kits they all speak or ask about AutoTrac? That is why. The stock shaft requires another u-joint to absorb vibration at all times. Without it on a "Full Drop" kit the AutoTrac t-case would vibrate the snot out of you. That is also why AutoTrac can't be used on trucks with Solid Axle Swaps with full locked hubs. AutoTrac would burn up.

Give it a shot sometime. Place your truck in drive with the engine off and try to turn it. Ain't movin. Place it in neutral, still stuck. Place it in neutral and Jack up the back axle and turn the rear driveshaft. The front turns with it. On stock vehicles AutoTrac is fine. Add a Rancho, RCD, FabTech or some other spindle lift and you will feel it vibrate a little. Drove me nuts. Glad I don't have it anymore.
