Swapping TH350 transmission '76 with '84 700r

I have a '76 shortbed 4x4 with an original turbo 350. Recently, 3rd gear finally went out. My thoughts are to swap transmissions/transfercase and replace the original with a later model 700r/transfercase. I know that the 700r requires shifting input from a computer but know that products are available to set the shift points. The addition of an overdrive gear would well be worth the trouble.

I was able to pick up a 4x4 drivetrain from an '84 suburban complete with front and rear drivelines. I also got the crossmember from the suburban along with all brackets and hardware.

Before I have the newer tranny rebuilt I wanted to see if anyone out there had done a similiar project. I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

The 700R4 has been around since 83 and is non computer controled up to 92, which is the best trans to get your hands on because they are built and set-up the best of all the years. All that is needed is a differant kick down bracket to accomidate the throttle cable and trans kick down cable.(The kick down has to be properly adjusted or you can burn up a 700r4). You may have to change your electrical plug that connects to the trans aswell. If you get one that is non 4x4, you can have the output shaft changed to accomidate the transfercase at a trans shop for cheep. " Once you have experianced overdrive you'll never go back." Good luck :)

Umm.. I would'nt waste my time with a 700r, get the Hydra Matic rebuilt, or find one. If you go looking for one, there is a short tail piece or a long one.... Make sure you get the right one.

My brother did a similiar swap in a 56 chevy bel air I know its a car but he had turbo350 in it and put the700r4 he did the kick down and some other mods and changed cross member to make it work and loves it especially the over drive. It puts out about 355 hp and 400 pounds torqe and holding strong.I say go for it.
