First pedal to floorboard experience ???

Today I was climbing a fairly steep hill in traffic at about 35mph and came behind a truck near the end of the passing zone, so of course I had to jump on it to pass. Well pedal to the metal then nothing for a complete second or two, then a very loud bang and then the truck must have downshifted to first and almost immediately went to second with a clunk. Even the guy in the passenger seat went "want the #%&@ was that"? All I could do was stare blankly at him  . I guess the first big bang could have been the G80, I understand they are sometimes loud upon locking in. But what was the second or two of "NOTHING" when the pedal was to the floor? Was "that" torque management or just the truck figuring out what to do? That doesn't give me that warm feeling, if I am in an emergency situation where gas is good I want it to move now. I guess the second thunk could have been spring wrap since I was pulling off the wash board section of road. You guys experience this or have any thoughts about this. Thanks

I've gotten to the point to where I drive in "3" a lot instead of "D" when I know I'm not going to be going over 40-50 mph. I swear, my stupid transmission shifts into overdrive at the slowest possible speed, and then refuses to shift out of it until I floor it, wait two seconds like you, and then it jumps down to 1st and about 4k rpms.

Very annoying.

And I know what you mean about it getting you hurt. It sucks when you're running 50 up the onramp, hit the interstate in overdrive, have to merge over in front of a semi, floor it, and it still stays in overdrive and you just barely get up to 70 before the truck is on your rear bumper.

I'm sure the 285's with 3.73 gears doesn't help...but...the truck makes no power below 2k rpms, yet refuses to go above that in normal driving unless you give it a lot of throttle to hold each gear longer. And we all know what that does to your gas mileage.

Although, I have a G80, and have never heard it, or the suspension, clunk at speed.

The G80 will not engage above 20 mph so that should not have been the cause of your clunk. It was probably some lash in the driveline caused by the hesitation in the transmission followed by a very hard shift into first gear going uphill. The lack of response can be very disconcerting for sure especially if you are seeing your life flash before your eyes. Try your truck out in a few situations so you will have a better feel for how it is going to respond when you mash the go peddle. The throttle response can be very disappointing and often require a harder push on the peddle than you want. It may be torque management under very hard acceleration or the way the transmission is programmed to keep shifts smooth under less strenuous acceleration. Either way very frustrating. A tune would help to reduce this situation in most cases but downshifts can sometimes still be slow under light throttle application.

sucks dude. i have a 99 'newer' body style. never have problems like that... and i jump on it all the time.

the only "CHRONIC" illness that i'm having with my truck is the window motors. i replaced the passenger one a couple weeks ago, and now the drivers side is done. bummer.

Well I guess that is progress for you. I guess I am just not used to the slow throttle response. My v-6 blazer had way better throttle response and I didn't have to submerge the pedal to get it to move. I press the pedal and not much happens and press some more then bang the rpms fly. Just a learning curve to adjust driving habits to the vehicle. It is almost like the brakes you press and not much happens, so you press more and then bam you are stopping in a hurry. I think the auto industry could learn a bit from the motorcycle manufacturers about throttle response and braking :mad:

i have had that probem before with mine.....i like the way the truck drives when the tow haul is on it seems much faster

The hesitation is for certain Torque Management. I have never experienced any bangs on a hard acceleration, though. I have an '01 with 265/70-16, 3.73s and a G80 locker and no problems with bangs or pickup even. It even downshifts exactly where I want it. I just can't wait to do a tune to see what's really possible.
