Change Oil Light

Was wondering if anyboby knew if the change oil light comes on due to mileage or if there is a sensor that can tell when it is time to change the oil. Changed to a diffrent brand of oil and my light has not come on yet. On the average, the oil change light on my truck it should have come on by now.

I think the PCM uses mileage and engine run time, and maybe a few other factors to calculate LOF intervals.

Not sure I'd let it ever get beyond 4,000 miles and certainly not the possible 12,000 miles it mentioned.

I ignore it, I use Mobil 1 5w-50 red cap synthetic, and change every 10,000 miles.

Mine goes off like clockwork every 3K - '01 GMC Sierra 1500.

 

To reset it, turn ignition to run, pump gas pedal 3 times, turn to off, then restart

Anyone know at what percent of oil life the change oil light will come on? I'm currently at 85% and 3500 mi. I've gone the first 3 oil changes at 3-4k, and decided to see if this oil life monitoring system work. I've been using 5w-30 Mobil1 since I got this thing.

The modern history of oil change reminders:

 

First there was the owner's manual.

 

Then the windshield sticker.

 

Then the oil life monitor.

 

Now OnStar wants to offer a service where the car tells them what your oil life monitor says and they send you a letter or email with a link to schedule a service appointment at your dealer.
