new truck, looking for some advice

Proud owner of 05 GMC 2500hd crew cab with the duramax/allison trans. Bought because it is so tough and want to be able to haul the boat and soon to be camper where ever and when ever. Dealer installed a set of BFG 285-75-16's and made the truck look alot better. I do have several questions I would appreciate some help with. Salesman was not very knowledgable and this is my first diesel anything.

- Do I need to have the DIC reset due to speedo and odometer changes from the larger tires ? If not , how to figure mph so as to avoid the pesky troopers.

- Am I supposed to break the truck in easy and slow like a gasser?

- How long do you break a diesel in ?

 

 

By the way, did I mention that this thing is bad!!

I don't know about the break in period on the diesel, mine is a gasser. But I do have the 285's and you do have to fix the speedo problem. I bought a hypertech programmer to compensate for the difference in size- works great and I know how fast I am going. I don't believe the dealer will fix that for you- thats why i went with hypertech.

Take your truck back to the dealer, when I upgraded from 245 to 265 tires, it took them about 10 minutes to reprogram the speedo and didn't cost me anything. As far as break in, just drive it normal, but do not pull any loads for the first 2,000 miles. Avoid lots of idling time, as you want to get and keep engine temps up to normal for the rings to properly seat. After about 2,000 miles, pull all you want.

I have 285/70/17's on my 2500 HD with the 8.1 / allison. My speedo is correct at 30 mph, reads low by 3 at 40, 4 at 50, 5 at 60 and 6 at 70. So if my speedo says 70 I am going 76. Thats been verified by "those pesky troopers". Ok so I used a radar and verified it myself.

 

Don't know if yours will read the same, but this might give you some insight on how fast you might actually be going. So you can fend off "those pesky troopers." :thumbs:

I think their speedo adjustment ability tops out with 265 tires, though, not the 285s.

break in period for the d/a is 500 miles never

staying at constant speeds alway very up and

down. also think cant go over 55mph the first

500 all in the owners manuel.i did here the same

thing about the tires dealer only will go to 265-75

r16 on speedo change.i went with 265s and drove

with a gps at 70 it was sying i was going 71 1/2 i

was told though that gps are not very accurate eith

er so i dont know what to believe good luck :thumbs:

Saw similar things. 500 plain, 500 tow then change fluid in your rear diff. Ditto with speed as posted by others. Change engine oil at the same time. At 5K, change oil in engine, rotate tires and change Allison spin-on filter. Wait until 10K. Rotate. Change over to synthetic.

 

You might find it helpful to take detailed notes about your truck's performance, if you have the DIC option. That might help you determine when the truck is out of line. I also have a new 05 2500hd. I am trying to determine how much fuel is really left in the tank after it starts to warn. So far, it looks as if the yellow light and warning comes on as a function of the sending unit in the tank. Consequently, the "fuel used" is not always at the same mark when you get the low fuel reading. Mine still undershoots, as far as estimated fuel used. But it appears to get closer and closer to real values. It is currently about 0.8gal off (e.g, I have to add 0.8gal more at the pump than the "fuel used" claimed I had used).

Is the programmer easy enough to use for novice. How much would one expect to pay for the programmer.

 

 

 

 

 

The programmer is easy to use- there are other brands as well but I have only used the hypertech so far. I can't remember cost- I think it was in the $300 range (but that was for the 6.0, might be different on DMax for some reason-don't know)

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
