Just got a 97 K2500 Silverado SB

Hey there,

I just bought a 1997 K2500 Silverado short bed. It looks pretty darn clean. It's got about 97,000 miles on it. I'm going to take it into a shop and have them check it out head to toe. Only problems I've found so far... a slight(class 1 for military types) oil leak coming from near the pan, and a whine from the fuel pump. I'm thinking of having the fuel filter replaced. It has a auxillury fuel tank in the bed that I want to pull out and hopefully sell.

Anybody got any recommendations on what I should have inspected other than the obvious? And is there anything I should look out for in the future?

Thanks

If its a 350 check the intake manifold for coolant leakage in the front and back and also the 350s had a heater hose "nipple" on the passenger side of the intake that was prone to coolant leakage.

As far as the fuel pump whine my '97 K1500 350 did the same thing as did many others I've heard so I kinda consider it normal.

Other than that its a pretty good solid truck

auxilary fuel pump?? sounds like someone was running some kind of boost on that truck

There's a 40 gallon tank in the bed. On the dash there's a switch to pump the fuel into the main tank I guess. It's in really great shape, but 97k miles. I'm betting it's mostly highway miles. My guess is that the previous owner did a lot of trailering.

Thanks for the tips MS3DALE. It is a 350. I read a few other postings by other people who said their fuel pumps whined too. It just seems a bit louder than it ought to be.

from what ive learned on my trucks, you have to keep up the maintenance on the fuel filter change intervals, I chane mine every 3 months. Hope that helps :fume:
