Vara-Ram

some of the questionable things I've read reagarding this product:

"The only time that I used to see over 10 MPG was doing all highway driving so there was a very noticeable difference in fuel economy with this system.the "butt meter" had to say It picked up by 2.35 MPG.

I'm going to check on the full system today. The ram air portion can be added at a later date. That's what I'll be doing with this truck."

"My HD is now running a preproduction version of the complete system. I installed it to check fitment and to see if any other tweeks are needed before the production versions start going out. Everything looks good! I just need to modify one bracket that bolts the scoop to the radiator support"

"Going from a stock induction to the full ram air system should be a night and day difference. This is where they are advertising a 1/2 second reduction in 0-60 times. I was comparing the non-ram air to the full ram air. It's more responsive with the full kit but that isn't a night and day difference"

"I'm not running the "full kit" yet, just the Vara Ram airbox portion, and yes I would have to say there is a difference, I don't have anything to back this up other than "seat of the pants""

"and there will be a second air inlet from inside the engine compartment to increase air flow. They told me they have never recorded air flow across the MAF at the volumes they are seeing now from the 8.1L systems. I understand that this is probably a lot of sales hype"

"A good way to look at this is VaraRam is on top of making sure they are 110% perfect before doing a major release. "

"I was told that they have made changes to the system and also went with a better filter"

"I really think you need to remove the plastic shroud under the hood, I don't see how you are going to get any air into the system the way you have it ?? and I don't see how you will get any "Ram Air" effect.

"edit-Steve, you are 100% correct. The fit is perfect when I remove the plastic guard and I'm sure that is the way it's supposed to be.

I've gone back over my instructions and nowhere does it say to remove that piece.

"still having fitting problems with mine if anyone has suggestions. Not sure why, but it seems like that section of tubing that drops down on the stock intake tube is making the flexable tube section kink up. I will try and get some photos tomorrow, im getting to aggrivated tonight

and on and on, and on

thanx to all for the posts

Chris, I believe this product is an interesting study in "too good to be true"

I haven't seen any documention regarding a difference in ambient air temp at the MAF.

This may be because in the stock intake configuration the air is comming from inside the fender wall. Which is going to be the same temp as the grill intake.;

Also it appears any increased air flow is the result of a less restrictive air filter(AND IN SOME CASES "FILTER BYPASS"). If I were running for an ET i would just remove the air box and replace it with the foot from a pair of panty hose to keep out the big chunks.

As for the "ram" air effect..I find that claim simply laughable. It looks like someone used a dustpan for the intake. You'd more than likely get better forced induction useing the the output from a shopvac.

Here's the design concept:Secure the shopvac in the box. Power it useing an inverter(ooops just lost some power there). and run a cool looking hose over the top of the cab down the hood into the Vara-sux.

Then to top off this whole fiasco the mold design for the product appears to have been attempted by a highschool industrial arts class....

Okay I'm finished.

Today I'm guilty of being a critic instead of a doer. However, I've learned when I'm not sure what to do, I do nothing..

Danny, you need to updat your sig if your vram is not comming... Sorry you guys feel the way you do. I have only seen a handfull of negative feedback, out of the plenty that seem satisfied. Only one of that handfull had a "filter-bypass" issue. I have been around and worked on cars for 20 years so im not a newbie when it comes to reports. EVERY, product has problems, hell, i had a rough time installing the bracket on this thing till i figured out the holes were not correct for my shroud offset. So i drilled 2 holes through the 1/8" plastic about 2" over and it dropped right in. I will attest that the looks of the thing are not A+...B+...hmmmmm, well they leave a little to be desired in the aethstetic's department, lets just say that. That being said, i have checked and rechecked my MAF after each drive, and i only did that because of the "ONE" report i heard of a bypass issue. I never saw a thing, as clean as the day i installed it. I am not trying to force the issue, so i will say one thing........its performace gains far outweight its appearance. Absolutely a substantial difference in performance for the better. This is not a rebuttal to the current discussion, but a different perspective on the product. Just though i would share MY experience on the product. Continue your discussion...................
