Rebuilt Frontend

Rebuilt the frontend suspension on my '76 1/2 ton Suburban over the weekend.  I get every-other Friday off work, so Thursday night I pulled the control arms off.  Friday morning I took them over to a friend's shop and used his tools and press to remove the bushings and ball joints.  I pressed in the new urethane bushings (upper and lower control arms) and the lower ball joints.  The upper ball joints are bolt-ons.  I also replaced the tie rods and tie rod ends and the idler arm.  Painted the arms while they were off to make them look nice, and put it all back together, finishing up Saturday morning.  Then I went to NTB and got an alignment and some new Michelin Cross-Terrain SUV tires.  These are the quietest, best riding light truck tires I have had.  My '96 had Tiger Paws, which sucked, and my '99 had Generals, which wore out in 25K miles, but handled better than the Tiger Paws.

So now the old Suburban rides and handles better than new.  That combined with the mods I've done on the 454 and she'll keep up with most any other truck on the road (except for the gas mileage!).

Anyone else working on old stuff?

    • About the only GM that compares well with its competitors through the small to midsize vehicles is the Trax. I would like nothing better to just drive GMs. My wife in a Cadillac me in a Chevy minivan and Colorado. Part of my day is comprised of reading and watching comparisons of automobile. I could buy a car today. I’m back to research the next. 
    • Do you have any DFM defeat devices like the Range modules?  
    • I had a similar problem years ago and it ended up being the positive battery cable that ran to the main fuse block/ECU. It looked fine but when I sliced it open it was badly corroded. 
    • I'm the original poster of this thread; I'm 85,000 miles now with no transmission issues after they did the fluid change without filter at 45,000.  I plan on a fluid change AND filter in another 5,000 miles and agree with you on staying to witness what happens if possible.  Ideally I would have done the filter at 45,000 too, but my original dealer was incompetent.  I've since moved on and get service done by another more reputable dealer, so I'm hopeful they follow the correct procedure at 90,000.
