ABS light came on

2003 2WD V6 auto Silverado.

Was cruising down the freeway at 65 mph a few weeks ago when one of the rear wheels hit a patch of ice and lost traction slightly. Well, the ABS light came on, and I assume the reason why is because the computer counted more pulses on that wheel than what the other three had, and assumed the sensor is bad. Light has been on ever since, and the ABS does not work.

SO- does this mean I have to take it to the dealer (he's a crook) every time I happen to slip or hydroplane a little? That seems ridiculous to me. I was wondering if I could clear an error code by pulling the ABS fuse or disconnecting the battery cable?? Thanks for any suggestions.

Your assumption of why the ABS light came on is incorrect. (Think about a vehicle with a limited slip differential. While the vehicle is turning, the tire in the outside of the turn will rotate more that the tire in the inside of the turn.)

Anyway, you can reset the current code status by disconnecting the battery. Leave it disconnected for at least 10 sec. If the light comes back on, you can go to any shop or anyone with a scantool and pull codes. You do not have to go to your crooked dealer.

arent there any other dealers around? and, unless you are over the 36k you should still be under warranty - hard to have him screw you over then?

i know i wouldnt be comfortable driving around with the "idiot" lights telling me my brake system wasnt operating properly...

Disconnecting the battery on OBDII vehicles does nothing but erase the KAM in the PCM. The code will not be erased and will come right back on so you will have to have the dtc erased with a tech II or any generic OBD II scanner. Anytime a fault in the ABS system is found, the ABS light will illuminate and the ABS system will be dissabled. As far as why the light came on, you wount know until you find out what codes are present. It might have been from just 1 wheel spinning so fast that it went out of the DRAC's acceptable range and thats what triggered the abs light. Take it to the dealership, good luck.
