HELP! WHAT IS GOING ON????

Hi guys,

I have a 2000 Suburban. A month ago I went to start it and it turned over fine but nothing, wouldn't fire. I had it towed the local shop and they determined that the fuel pump had gone, so $1200 later I had a new fuel pump put in (aftermarket). I drove 1000 miles and again the truck stopped working. I had it towed to another garage ( I was on vacation ) and they said the fuel pump had gone and put in a new GM pump (bill was $1100). Everything seemed fine. The next day (yesterday) I drove back home from the holiday. I was 2 hours away from home and the SAME thing happened again. I had towed home and I have no idea what is going on with this. My confidence in this vehicle has gone. As a side note, 2 months ago I started having problems with the remote starter on the vehicle, so I had it removed (completely). I don't really think this has anything to do with it but I'm really at a loss to figure this out. Is the electrical system burning out pumps? If not, what is? Please help me.

thanks

Wouldn't happen to have the 8.1 in it, would it?

Because I know that they had a lot of problems with the crank position sensor on those. The truck would either just not start, or would die while driving down the road. :seeya:

Welcome to the forums, by the way :banghead:

thanks for the info. It is an 8.1. Do you know where the sensor is located? Also, will changing the sensor require setting the timing again or will it not affect the timing?

thx

All the information you're looking for about the crank sensor and how to change it is in one of my other post so here's a link, it's after the throttle stuff. By the way you're paying twice as much for unecessary repairs as you would at my shop-LOL. Actually if you are losing fuel pumps that fast have the electrical system looked at and make sure you have a clean filter.

Thanks for the info. I'm in Canada so although those prices seem high, they're probably in line. I wish I had the time and I'd do the work myself. It sounds like a bitch to change it...

Right DS head, into bell housing. I had to do mine from underneath, and if the engine and exhaust system are hot it will be a lot more difficult. I wish mine had been easy, it wasn't. Not impossible but I take my time. I've seen how hard things can get when you're in a hurry. Mine was a bear to slide out and I didn't want to break it with some left between the tranny and block. It did take me an hour but that's at a shop on the lift.

One more thing if you start this job with a 10mm GearWrench on hand you're golden. Preferably stubby, it would be worth the money to buy one just for this job. There's not much room for hands in the area.

can you describe what it looks like so I know what to look for? Also, will I have to re-time the engine??

thx

After replacement you SHOULD, you do not have to, use a scanner tool (or goto someone who can) in order to have a "Crankshaft Variation Relearn Procedure" performed. This takes very little time. The truck will run fine without it but it would run slightly better afterwards, you may not even notice any difference but none the less it's recommended after replacement. Don't sweat this as a reason not to do the main job yourself. There is no manual timing adjustment, timing is completely microprocessor controlled, the only way to alter it is by reprogramming.

As for any questions try using the site I posted about the other day, it will give you the entire procedure with diagrams from the GM service manual. My post is currently about half way down this forum's current page. It's something like "DIY'ers take note, GM Service online link". Goto the site linked to in that post then find it like so:

From the Home Page:

Enter 2001 (8.1 not there for 2K) Chevy Suburban, click next.

Uner "Service Manual / Bullentins" click on "C/K 800 Truck".

On the next screen enter "crank sensor" in the search box.

On the next screen go down to the "Engine Controls - 8.1L" and click on "Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Replacement"

Now you're there and have all the information you need.

You got it? If you think about it give my link post a bump to keep it in view for those like you still unaware of it yet.
