Trailer Harness Problem?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 1500HD with trailer package. I bought it used about six months ago. Recently I tried hooking up a trailer but couldn't get the lights to work (standard round connector). The only working light is the right blinker. I checked the trailer with another pickup and all lights worked fine.

Visually, the harness looks fine. I also checked fuses, but didn't see any problem there.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?

Thank you.

Funny you should ask! I just put new trailer lights on my boat trailer last night and tested them on my wife's 04 Tahoe. When I hooked it up the trailer parking lights didn't work. I broke out the multimeter and tested everything and determined it was her truck. I hooked the trailer to my truck and it was alright. I then started poking around with the meter on hers and found that the pins on the back of the trailer light receptacle that the wiring harness plugs into were bent a bit. All but the parking lights were getting the connection. I just bent it back straight and put the wiring plug back in.

Hope yours is simple.

Thanks for the reply. I pulled the receptacle apart last night thinking that might be the problem. I still only had power to the right blinker.

Did you check both fuse panels, the dash one and the underhood one? I know that most of the trailer fuses are located underhood in that fuse panel. How are you testing for power? You could test with a test light before the recepticle and that would rule that out. Your trailer could also have a bad ground. I think the trailer wiring harness goes up the left side of the frame rail and hooks up near the taillight. Just some thoughts.
